How many here listen to vinyl through headphones?

Postby Keso77 » 04 Aug 2012 10:31

So, since I am going to be a father (x2, twins this time) again I put together a headphone rig. For those nights you just have to get your vinyl fix but everyone is sleeping.

I' wondering how many here use cans on a regular basis?
Does anyone actually prefer it from loudspeakers?

I like it more and more, but doubt it will ever replace conventional listening, through speakers, as my favorite.

The rig:

Nagaoka MP-100 with 200 stylus - Dual CS5000 - Lehmann Black Cube - Little Dot mk3 - Sennheiser HD650.

I do. And I use a Lehmann bcube as well. If yours is pre 2006 you can get a new hot rod board for it that crushes the old one.

Listening to vinyl through headphones is great. My set-up is:

Dual 1219 with Shure V15 Type 4 and Jico SAS stylus
Bellari VP130 phono stage
Singlepower PPX3 6SN7 headphone amp
AKG 701 or Sony MDR SA5000 headphones

It is a very satisfying listening experience.

I do!
Because the stereo is in the same room as the cursed TV. And that my daugther goes to bed at around 1900 hours!

Old picture though, the td125 LB is now up and running and has its place next to the headphones.

(But of course there is a TT in the living room as well, a Rega Planar 2 with some modifications!)

Kul med fler svenskar här!

Sweet setup there, friend. There is something special about TD125LB. Almost got my hands on one once.

I wonder... The hotrodded Lehmann black cube... Could it be a better powersupply? Brianmch?

Not if I can help it. I very much so appreciate the way sound fills a room and reflects from the walls... As long as it isn't too much...haha
Too much to list, I sell the stuff, so most of it was free (the only way I can afford my addiction)!

STAX - (was How many here listen to vinyl through headphones

Postby uem » 16 Feb 2013 15:40

Dear colleagues,

As I grew up with "Vinyl" as the only source (mid sixties..!! :? ) I also was an early user of phones.

With increasing age, and staggering up the AudioPhile Ladder of never ending expenses for gear
I also matched the better sources (VINYL and CD...) with the best phones I could afford.
Currently this is the STAX 009 phones & 007T2 Stax amp.
(I consider the rest of my source & electronic stuff as "adequate")

Even there are various critics out there, who claim, that "pops & crackles, etc" and what else is wrongly associated with vinyl, would totally be against using high-end phones I can only state: ALL WRONG !
My records always sounded even better with the latest & newer - and better - phones (I owned over 5 different STAX phones - and a few others - over the Years.)

Hence: the old news of Source First is still valid - and please Do match them with the best reproduction system you can get - an excellent pair of Phones & amps

"Phony" Regards....

Urs

PS: Of course: an excellent pair of SPEAKERS is also an alternative - it will just cost you much more...!!! :D

Hi,
a renewed old thread! Yes, I listen to vinyl through Sennheiser DH-600 headphones, for about 60% of my listening time. Great experience!

But I prefer the loudspeaker alternative despite the notorious room interactions, speaker cabinet intrusions, and amplifier considerations. The perspective of listening through loudspeakers makes the crucial unnegotiable difference for me. And binaural recordings notwithstanding.

I do listen to vinyl or other sources through headphones from time to time.

I've got several options:

Eiter: Linn Basik/Akito/AT95E or pro-ject debut 3 esprit/AT95E with a pro-ject phono box 2 and a musical fidelity v-can headphone amp, headphones: Sennheiser HD 525 or Sony MDR-XB 500. The Sennheiser is completely unlistenable with the v-can, lacking bass, rough and cold voices, horrible. With the Sony, its ok.

Or: One of this turntables (with or without the phono-box) with either a yamaha AX-570 or a musical fidelity A1X or an CR Kalypso Valve Amp (EL84)with an old Stax SR-40, connected to the speaker outputs. I don't use the stax that much anymore because of its lacking bass and its poor comfort. Since i wear glasses, the high ear pads pressure is enerving me after a short time of wearing them.

Funny that both of the dynamic headphones doe fine with the yamaha amp. After my experience i think that the v-can is one of the most overrated hifi-products i ever had. I would not buy it again.

regards, kalypso

I'm a regular vinyl>headphone listener - mainly because I can listen at levels that don't disturb others in the house.

I use a Graham Slee Reflex M phono amp with an input direct into a Graham Slee Solo Ultra Linear headphone amp. Cans are either HD650s or Denon 7000s. Great sound quality from all the kit . . .

saying that i recon a good £100 pair of headphones blow away most speakers around the £1000 mark, easier to set up too ;)

My headphones are far better than my speakers. We're talking Grado SR225i vs Wharfedale Diamond 9.1. To be honest my speakers are due to be upgraded soon. A decent pair, but I feel they're the weakest link in my chain. No doubt there will be another thread for suggestions on that topic soon!

Ultimately though, the headphones have always been there for late night listening to avoid disturbing others.
