The Nakamichi Dragon was TOTL in the 80's.
I don't understand why a lot of people think that, it's simply not true: it was one of the more advanced decks from Nakamichi though but certainly not the only one or the best they ever made...
It was the only deck that had auto Azimuth during playback and which was auto reverse compatible.
That makes it also the most fragile deck, as you will never be able to restore one, once the head is gone...
If you really want a good deck, I recommend the Nakamichi 480 (over any CR series in the same price range btw)
The 480 has in basics the same transport as the 1000ZXL (that one comes close to TOTL btw)
The 480 has 3 motors, a dual capstan and a tapepad lifter.
The 480 can be acquired sometimes for almost nothing, you spend a few bugs with a true restorer and you will guaranteed be happy for the rest of your tape life...
There is also the 480Z which has in addition a bias setting, Dolby C and led vu meters, I had them both, I thought the basic 480 was a lot better in sound (and both where restored by a true Nakamichi believer)
I also had a CR-3 (3 head version of the CR-2, and dual capstan) but that thing never caught me due to the cheap basic plastic look, it did recorded and sounded quit well though...
The 480 and 480Z are available in beautiful silver and also in black.
There is also a 482 (and Z) which is the 3 headed version, that was only available in black.
The later CR series are not bad but nothing special.
The later CR 1 and 2 series which replaced the 480 and 480Z did not had dual capstan, no tape pad lifter and the transport was no longer made by Nakamichi...
Obviously there are other well made cassette decks of course, I have only experienced these (next to a 1000ZXL)
A well restored 480 will never fail you, you will never be bored and replacement parts are endless available...
Among the best they made:
1000ZXL (and Limited version of that)
ZX-7 and 9 (7 is belt, 9 is direct drive) < true impressive machines
Dragon (okay, here you are)
