PTA dust cover question.

Postby Zebulon_minor » 31 Mar 2012 16:42

Hello all! :D

I would need a new dust cover for my PTA, and I have had trouble finding transparent pink acrylic here in the states, go figure... The ones among you that have had new covers made, or made them yourself, from where have you sourced the material, or which manufacturer have you used? Also, have you made them from 3mm or 5mm acrylic stock?

I found this vendor online: http://www.plasticonline.co.uk/acrylic-sheets-discs/acrylic-sheets/pink-tint-acrylic-sheets/3mm-pink-tint/3mm-pink-tint-acrylic-sheet-1000mm-x-500mm/prod_1291.html?review=read, is this close to the correct grade and color do you think? I was thinking of sourcing the material myself, and then have the lid manufactured here in the US.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!

The colour looks about right but you'll need the 5mm so the weight is right for the sprung hinges.

That is as close as you'll get. My PTA has unsprung hinges (very inconvenient). The only 5mm PT lid to pass through my hands was on a PT Export, and had the plastic for the slots milled down to 3mm to fit the standard hinges. All the rest have been made from 3mm, and the standard (Linn) hinges are designed for 3mm.
To be honest, I'd have it made in the UK and shipped over - both Plastic Online and the Funk Firm can supply ready-made lids, made to measure for PTs, and packing them so they don't get broken is not rocket science. Having said that, if you know a company which can cut and glue acrylic, they should be able to source a pink tint acrylic for you (if it is pink and you can see through it, it is the right tint!), we can give you the measurements and it can all be done in the US of A.

I just realized that Plastic Online does make lids as you say, I will drop them a line to find out how much they run. I do have hinges from my old lid, the lid that had a terminal encounter with our two Korat cats...

The company that I contacted here in the US, http://stereosquares.com/, could not find a pink tinted transparent acrylic, maybe they didn't look close enough, although I did provide them with the link to the PO page...
