Can anyone tell me where the motor is mounted on an Anni? Thinking here, thinking.

It's mounted on the sub-chassis directly between the spindle and arm. The blurb says that that's where Arthur always wanted to mount it but hadn't been able to find a smooth enough motor up until then.

Thank you very much for the info Zebbo. I think I will remain with an off the sub mounting. And thanks to Tim and Natty for info on the composite materials website. So much to go at on there. My problems are slowly becomming resolved. The two (or three) arm deck will live.

I think it is near, but not on, the transit bolt position on one of the earlier subchassis; about 77 or 78mm in a line from the spindle centre through the transit bolt (which is about 70mm away). Not that I am slowly working towards building a mini-Anni 8)

Well, spoke to Wyndham at Expert Stylus yesterday and he is at a loss. As far as he is concerned the cartridge is absolutely fine. He had it set up in their system and even played a couple of Neil Diamond tracks over the phone using my Koetsu and I have to say it sounded fine, I couldn't detect the sort of mis-tracking I've been suffering. I've fitted my mate's old Audio Technica ATC-05 in the meantime and, although it's not my taste, it tracks absolutely fine. Anyway, the Koetsu is on its way back and I'll have another go at setting it up but I've never had difficulty like this setting up a cartridge before so I'm at a bit of a loss really.

Set it all up again last night and did manage to get it playing with only very slight mis-tracking but only by having the anti-skate set to it's absolute max. I'm starting to think that the problem may actually lay with the arm as I put my Cardas Sweeper record on which has blank tracks for setting anti-skate. Now, before anyone chirps in to say they are a waste of time, I know that but it IS usually possible to get the arm to move one way or the other just using the anti-skate adjustment. The trouble is, with the a/s set at 2 the arm skims inwards - fast! With the a/s set at 1 - same and at 3 only just a bit slower but still a fast inwards movement.
I e-mailed SME to ask if they could give the arm a check-over to see if anything is amiss but they offered me a complete service "including the anti-skate unit" for £467!! I've replied asking if it's not possible to just check, (and adjust if necessary), the anti-skate. I await a reply.

One thing it could be is twisted arm wiring.

If it's skating inwards you need to increase the bias, so maybe the wiring is wound the opposite way which is effectively "setting" your bias to "-2" or so before you start?

I had a similar thing with cardas wire in a Rega - I had to untwist it in the right direction (either c/w or anti c/w) in order to get the arm "neutral".

I think clockwise will pull it outwards and anti-clockwise winds it in, but you need to be looking at it to make sure, (which I'm not at the moment!).

If so, SME could sort it quite easily.

Hi Zebbo sorry to read about your Koetsu woes. How did the SME perform with your stand in denon ?
Also did esc do anything to your Koetsu when you returned it or did they just check it . Also did they retip it with or without their mounting washer. Regards loo

Hello Loo
I'm pretty sure they didn't do anything to the cartridge other than fit it on to their test system and play it. I know I was listening on the phone but it did sound absolutely fine and it was quite a powerful vocal sound exactly like what would cause it to mis-track on my deck. I don't know whether it has a mounting washer?? Is that between the stylus and cantilever?

Latest update:
Tried adding mass to the arm by way of 5g of blu-tack. With the VTF re-set to 2g the cartridge tracks much better and at 2.2g I can't detect any mis-tracking at all. I've made up a thin lead spacer and mounted it between cartridge and headshell. With the VTF again set at 2.2g the cartridge is tracking well and sounding much better, not quite the beguiling Koetsu sound but much improved.
I've now played about a dozen albums and the sound is improving all the time, maybe, just maybe, all will be well. :)
