upgrade for rpm 1.3 genie

Postby nik10 » 05 Jul 2012 12:10

I have just bought a rpm 1.3 genie with a ortofon 2m red cartridge. It is my first TT and while I think the sound is great, but the huge volume of diverse opinions and suggestions about upgrades has got me confused. Is it better to stick to the original package or should i try to experiment with an upgrade for the cartridge ?

Stick with what you have for a while, unless there is a problem. Learn to adjust everything properly. Check the cartridge alignment (protractors under Tools at the top).
Until you are familiar with what you have, you won't know if something you did is any better.

Cheers,

thanks for the advice Alec. The cartridge alignment was tricky ! the instrument given with the TT did not make the job any easier.... while the required pressure is 17.5, the scale on the instrument only had marking at 15 and then at 20. The instruction manual said that for getting 17.5, one should keep the stylus at a point half way between 15 and 20. Not a really accurate way to get a reading of 17.5 .. and though I managed, maybe a more accurate instrument should have been provided. Any comments ?
all the best,

Alignment protractors: http://www.vinylengine.com/cartridge-al ... tors.shtml
BTW, I think you were referring to overhang, not pressure.

17,5 (as in mN) is how Pro-Ject refer to the recommended stylus force.

Ah, I see.
Then half-way should do it, as they say, close enough for rock and roll.
So, how does it sound?

Was out of the country and returned home only two days ago; I have now set up the system and it sounds good to my ears ! I did the stylus force setting with the gauge provided by Project with the TT. I had wanted to set the required force with the Project precision gauge that I had purchased for the purpose but to my surprise it has refused to function now ... guess it would have to be returned to the vendor ( I bought my TT and accessories from Europe, including a Project manufactured phonobox and speed box)
Since this is my first TT, I have nothing really to compare the sound with but my untrained ears seem to be reasonably impressed with the final reproduction of sound.
My collection of vinyls is also very limited; I must start working on collecting more.

All the best
