Another great find today in the basement of the local junk (excuse me "antique") store.

IME its so much easier to find good quality classical in such places as opposed to, for example, rock or pop music of the same era. This copy was obviously a record loved by its previous owner(s), extremely crisp, clear recording in a pristine inner liner. I really love Nonesuch (they were such a bargain when I was a student in the last millennium) and I have always found their recordings consistently good and the variety of music and artists exceptional.

Already past Symphony No. 57. I thought I heard minor damage from a previous stylus in the finale. Either that, or... I cannot say I guess. The damage wasn't visible to my eyes. Not sure how it happened. The old stylus wasn't particularly worn. Maybe the stylus I'm using was able to detect something the old one could not. Hopefully my semi-automatic turntable can read that area without it being heard. Going to live with how the records sound, as they look pretty good still. No streaking under a UV flashlight. My old copy of the box set with the orange and black labels still looks worse than that with the red and silver.
That is a pretty sweet set of Haydn, are they original recordings or reissues?
They are mostly originals. Volume Eight was an early reissue, but sounded the same as the original. I do have an original pressing of Volume Eight, but it's got some hidden damage issues.

I have moved on to Volume One.

@DarthMaul: " rubber headshell spacer under the cartridge to prevent the cantilever from bending more than it should. "
Do you mean spacer affected VTA or somehow added compliance reducing cantilever amplitude ?
I am no longer using that cartridge you are referring to. The rubber spacer is currently not being used, thus I am not able to answer your question. Sorry.

Well this a part of the reason why I love Vinyl. I would have never taken a chance on this recording if it was a CD, but since it was $2 and in mint condition I figured why not. Even if it was a modern Angel record which have a poor reputation for quality.

What a surprise, the recording and pressing are excellent!! Dead quite vinyl and nice a clear sound. It does have a slightly "buttery" type finish to it like there was a bit of noise reduction, but overall a superb sounding disc.

More importantly: Bruckner: Te Deum. I have never heard the piece before and it is quite compelling heart felt. Reading the back it appears it was Bruckners' favorite and most important composition he made.

Wow in one record I have a renewed interest in Bruckner and have been giving more of a chance on Angle records recently.

Switched to my first copy of the box set. It is much cleaner sounding. The box has a label in much better shape with an intact hinge.

"... Gould’s... recording of the C-minor Concerto, again with Leonard Bernstein, met with general approval, even if Gould “yields more to his own nature than he should in the Largo” and “meanders and rhapsodizes without thinking that this movement, too, is by Beethoven.“ =D>

Rare opportunity for me to get a single box set done in one night. Currently at Symphony No. 80 in D Minor. No. 81 in G Major is next.

Wonderful recording. With a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, a perfect way to wind down the day before supper.

The thing about Glenn Gould's performances of the Major composers, is that, in my opinion, Glenn Gould was not affraid, or better said: he had the temerity, the confidence, and the know-how, to go 'outside-the-lines," in terms of tempo, melodic variations, etc. so he added his own idiosynchratic elements to the "interpretation" of these compositions; which may have pissed off some purists; nevertheless, he added sparks to the worn-familiar compositions with his characteristic bravado. =D> :D

Darth, been away for a few days but I just noticed you have the LP Dorati Haydn cycle. Wow, I own the cds but have never seen the Lps. How many volumes - I see you are on #9. Is that all 104 symphonies?

It is Vaughn Williams for me tonight. Just got home from work at 10 and got Lark Ascending on a mid 1980s EMI (UK Import) led by Richard Hickox and the Northern Sinfonia.

Rip, welcome to VE. Nice Bach recording. Never seen that one. Is it on Melodiya?
