Have you ever found an album at a flea market, garage sale, rummage sale or bargain bin that was worth far more than you paid for it?

I wanna hear some fairy tales; vinyl unicorns, if you will.

here are some of mine to start off:

Toots and the Maytals - Funky Kingston (mint) 25cents!

Rage Against the Machine (Self titled, first pressing, sealed) $1

H.P. Lovecraft (self-titled, very good, the shop two doors down wanted $100 for the same record in worse condition) $12

I fund my vinyl habit by buying job lots, often of 100 or so records for 99p. In a way, this is similar to what I did as a kid in the 1950s when I bought up all the 78s at Jumble Sales (remember them?) without having a clue as to what I was buying. Anyway, once home, I then sort through them. Some lots are worth 99p less than I paid for them, some (quite a lot) have a few worthy of reselling at a couple of quid each and occasionally I strike gold. My best ever discovery in terms of monetry reward was an excellent copy of Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced. Overall, there's not much money to be made; if you take into account the time and effort I spend sourcing, probably none at all. But it keeps me out of mischief and the great thing is discovering stuff which you then keep for yourself, which you'd never look at twice on a rack. A couple of weeks ago I discovered an LP of The Welsh and Scots Guards Bands. No more my sort of music than it probably is yours, but the sound quality (Decca SKL) and performance are riveting. A gem.

So not a fairy tale, but a different way of collecting with the odd surprise.

I paid four quid from a flea market record stall for pink Floyd's "a nice pair".
It's the early "Dr phang" cover that was changed after so many pressings due to legal issues,
the copies already made had a sticker over the offending article and on my copy there is some damage where this was removed, other than that, the records and covers are excellent condition.

The original picture is of a surgery front window of a dentist/orthodontist, the irony being that the guys name was w.r phang, as it turned out, it was illegal to use that kind of thing due to advertising issues or something, so it was changed to show the picture of a monk gargling, about to spit on holy ground,

It's in the top right corner of the front cover

The fleabay prices vary, but I have seen some copies go for 60 quid
Thorens TD166 mkvi-Rega RB250-Audio Technica AT95, Arcam Alpha 3, Mission 730, Glade Scented Candles & Nescafe vanilla/caramel/irish cream latte

I managed to get what I believe to be a first pressing of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Second Helping for $5.99 at Half Price Books. I would grade it just shy of near mint; it has a couple of small scuffs but plays very clean and the cover/labels are just about perfect. I can get some pics if anyone cares. If that's all true, then I paid about 10-15% of the going rate on fleabay. Not for sale.

D*** IT!! It just slipped out of my hand while I was turning it over. Scratched.... Oh well, at least it was cheap.

I got a copy of this for £1 from a record dealer at a car boot sale a few years back

It was an original 1957 Blue Note pressing and it paid my rent for a month.

I bought a new mint stereo copy of The Ventures "Walk Don't Run" on Dolton label for $1 at a thrift store and a sealed copy of a Sarah vaughan "Sweet Sultry and Swingin" for 50 cents at a yard sale

Decades of crate digging have turned up many valuable gems for next to nothing. (Remember we are not about a precious commodity like gold which has a price set by a huge relatively transparent market––record prices fluctuate tremendously, and condition is paramount.) Some of my favorites:

"Korea Blues/Everynight About this Time," Fats Domino original Imperial blue label––this is apparently the first Fats record to be issued on 45 (a few earlier tunes were reissued on 45, but the r'and b' maret was behind the much bigger pop market in switching to the 45 from the 78) and in mint condition it could sell for $800. Mine is no where near mint, but I only payed a quarter at a thrift store here in New Orleans, and I value it as a piece of local history.

"I Can't Help Falling in Love/Rock-A-Hula Baby"; Elvis Presley RCA Compact 33 stereo single. I think I paid a nickel for this one about 30 years ago; obviously there is nothing rare about the songs, but the format is highly collectable (a 7" 33 rpm small hole single in stereo) and carries a high book value. Someone recently failed to sell a mint copy on eBay for $3,500. Mine is more VG-- than mint, and Elvis collecting ain't what it used to be, but I could probably get a few hundred for it.

LATIN GOES SKA Skatalites on Treasure Isle. This a fantastic ska compilation from Jamaica that I picked up for $.50. I'm not sure if I have the first or second release of this lp, but it is clearly from the early to mid 60's and worth quite a bit. But I would never sell it; it is probably the most charming record I own.

ALEKBU-LAN "LAND OF THE BLACKS" Mtume Umoja Ensemble on Strata-East. Mtume is a percussionist who started out playing with Miles Davis and than in the 80's had some r'and b' hits. In between in the early 70's he put together an Afrocentric ensemble of notable "new music" New York musicians. Strata-East was a musician owned (Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell) label formed from the same self-determination principles as the music. (Gil Scott Heron recorded some important releases on the label.) This is a beautiful, funky 2 lp set in mint condition I picked up at a record sale held as fun raiser for community radio station WWOZ in the early 80's. I probably paid a dollar. It is probably a $200 record, but again I'm not selling.

TODAY'S YOUTH, Little Janice, Pzazz. I picked a sealed copy for $.50 just on a hunch, since I had never heard of her. On the very amateur looking cover, a young black girl in amazing striped trowser sits holding a cheap electric guitar--very groovy late 60's look. The sound is Motownish soul, the Little Janice has a very winning plaintive singing voice. I just learned it was produced by Paul Gayton, a legendary band leader in New Orleans from the jump blues era (early 50's) who by then had relocated to Los Angeles. A sleeper of a record valuable to the "Northern Soul" set, but again I'm keeping it.

A month ago I found a very nice Capitol first pressing Sgt. Peppers in mono for $1! I had to hit that resale shop every week for two years before I got anything better than a Poco album.

I went into a second-hand record store in Glasgow about 12 years ago. I ended up
piling up quite number of records and took them up to the guy who owned the place.

He began to, verbally, tally up the cost of the LPs (and I did the same in my head
as I didn't have a lot of spare cash on me at the time). He got to the bottom of the
pile and I was expecting him to say £(whatever price) - but he picked up the last LP
in the pile, that had a £3.99 sticker on it, and said to me "ach, you can have that one
for nothing
..."

That particular LP was a mint-condition copy of Red Box's "The Circle & the Square"...

Result. 8)

I continue to be in love with half price books. A couple weeks ago I was thumbing through records and got a bunch of good things. Very good condition Led Zeppelin "The Song Remains the Same" with all the inserts for $15. Lynyrd Skynyrd "One More From the Road" with inserts, also very good condition, $8. And quite surprisingly to me, an unopened copy of Steve Miller Band "Fly Like an Eagle" that turned out to be a first pressing for $8. I love record shopping.

I've had some great scores through the years:
Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction - original Robert Williams cover - 50¢
Bob Dylan - Biograph box - $4.99

Misfits - one day I came across
Die! Die! My Darling
Walk Among Us
Earth A.D.
Legacy of Brutality
Collection I
Evilive
...all at once, all for $2.50 each

I know I've got a few more, but most recently was the big score on Saturday all of these and many more for $1 each:

Jimi Hendrix - Radio One - sealed
Jimi Hendrix - Live at Winterland - sealed
Jimi Hendrix - War Heroes, The Peel Sessions, and Loose Ends - all open but all n/m
Soundgarden - Down on the Upside - sealed
Metalurgy - an independent 3-disc Metal comp from the very early 80's featuring Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Saxon, Venom, Iron Maiden, and Motorhead!

Still trying to figure out what to do with some of these records. I haven't opened any of the sealed vinyl yet, but I am sorely tempted. What I really need to do is sell some of these and put the cash towards a PHK. Luckily Ive got a friend who deals in records so I'm hoping he can give me a few ideas about these and some of the others I've got laying around.
I know it's only rock & roll, but I like it.

with the sealed albums I figure you might as well tuck them away until they're worth too much to keep
