I've read that guitar solos on Frank Zappa's studio albums were from live performances. Assuming that's true, Joe's Garage is my answer to your question. One of the best-sounding Rock albums I've ever heard, from the music itself, to the sound of the instruments and effects, to the final mix. I have it on CD and can't wait to pick it up on vinyl one day.

I'm not a huge fan of live albums but I dig the Maiden albums Maiden Japan (well that one's more of an EP) and Live After Death.

It's Alive by the Ramones is great too. I think I like these ones because they sound great and work well as a "greatest hits" package.

I've only got it on CD but Black Sabbath's Past Lives is excellent. Dug how it came with a Sabbath guitar pick 8)

KISS - Alive! takes the cake for me however. So kick ass.

I feel a live record is only worth listening to if it is a quality recording.Another thing to consider is how ''live'' the recording actually is.Over dubbing is common on live records,Kiss Alive is kinda well know for being heavily overdubbed. Some of them seem less ''live'' to me just knowing that you are not hearing anything the artist deemed flawed. And really not that ''live'' after all.
As a former drum technician for Artimus Pyle of Lynyrd Skynyrd I can tell you that there is virtually NO over dubs on the One more from the road record. And funny enough Allen Collins did not like the solo he played during Freebird and he spent hours in the studio trying to get it ''right''.Turns out the the solo he played during the show was the one used after all.One more From the Road is IMHO one of the 1970's finest live records and definitely in my top 10 all time live records.

Long Live the Lynyrd Skynyrd band!

Thin Lizzy - Live & Dangerous

Not sure this can strictly qualify after the band snuck into the studio separately and uh - tidied up their contributions

for live concerts i prefer Dvd's ! I like to see light effects , fire works and all the scenic part of a concert (live concerts are more than music ) . i'm remembering for instance "the way we walk live in concert" from genesis when the lights turn off for a while and then phil collins appears sat on drums ... 2 drummers playing is nice to hear but it's more nice to see and hear at the same time !
