I think it was the single "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon. My parents drove me to the department store to buy it.

"Toys In The Attic" by I forget who. (From the Dean Martin movie)

Then it was the "Out of Limits" single by The Marketts.

October 1966 - our Dad brought home a brand new record player, which i still use, so i went out and spent some of my paper round wages on "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys - i still have it, and the collection has grown a bit since then

Mid 70's - John Cale - Guts

So impressed by anyone who wore a hockey mask before Jason was ever dreamt of.

Still play it to this day. Brilliant version of 'Heartbreak Hotel'.

First record experience: playing 78s on a windup Victrola at my grandmother's place.

First music in the house bought by my parents was
Dave Brubeck Quartet: Take Five (my intro to jazz)
Henry Mancini: Music from Peter Gunn (still a favorite)
My Fair Lady
Flanders & Swann: At The Drop of a Hat
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherezade

First single - The Kingston Trio: Tom Dooley

First few LPs
Jimmie Rodgers: Jimmie Rodgers
The Greatest Hits of the Everly Brothers
The Kingston Trio: At Large
The Ventures: Walk Don't Run
The Chantays: Pipeline

Around that time I heard Benny Goodman: The 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert for the first time, Gene Krupa became my drumming hero.

First Record

Postby delcam1n0 » 28 Jan 2010 11:06

Repeat from a much much earlier posting...

"My first self-bought LP dates back to 1959 - so
it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
It was played on an "antique" Phillips player with
15-18 mu sapphire needle at the recommended
5 grammes over the first 5 years and with ever
better carts/styli the last 4,5 decades, probably 3
to 5 times a year: So 150 to 250 spins in total?
(Haydn Trumpet Concerto, (mono)DGG-Archive 195005)

It still sounds pretty amazingly good as of today!!"

Remembering the 1st vinyl I purchased..

Postby Terry Robinson » 28 Jan 2010 11:37

Evening all:

My gramophone records were mixed up when I put numbers on the covers way back when, but I believe the first was called "Light Orchestral Favourites", with music from 78's played by both The Queen's Hall Light Orchestra and Sidney Torch and his Orchestra -- Australian E.M.I. (mono) OEX 9464.

I love this "old-fashioned" British Light Music and still listen to it with much pleasure even to-day.

Cheers,

Terry.
C.D.'s are just a passing fad -- gramophones will live forever.

The first LP I bought with my own money was Queen Greatest Hits.
I still have it in ex+ condition and it still sounds great.

Prior to that my parents had bought me gems such as "Rock on with Cliff" and a 1974 KTel compilation called "Dynamite", hence my relief when I could afford to start buying my own choices.
Analogue: Townshend Rock V, Excalibur, Dead Mantis
Digital: Squeezebox Touch > M2Tech Young DAC
Amps: Luxman SQ-38u into Reference 3A Veena

Then how about your second single? "Bird Dog" by the Everly Brothers for me. Curiously, I just found another copy of that single in amazingly good shape for $1 in a thrift store last week. I never thought I'd run across a very good condition copy of that fifty years on.
