This is Johnny Cash's version of Tom Petty's " I won't back down" . I like this version a lot.

Easy Star All Stars - my favourite three cover albums reworked in a reggae style.:
Dub Side of the Moon (Dark Side...), Radiodread (OK Computer) and Easy Stars Lonely Hearts Dub Band (Sgt Peppers...)

and for a complete twist - Nuclear Assaults version of the 'happy days' theme :)

Nuclear Assault did the Happy Days theme?! Hahaha! Awesome.

Ironically, 2 of my favorite covers are on the same album.

A Camp - Walking The Cow (originally by Daniel Johnston)

A Camp - Rock n' Roll Ghost (originally by The Replacements)

Both versions are amazing and definitely compete very well with the originals IMO.

Also like Death Cab For Cutie's version of "Earth Angel".

Brian75 - Nuclear Assault covered a whole bunch of songs in the '80s - Good Times Bad Times, Ballroom Blitz, Happy Days. All good fun.

Ballroom Blitz done by Nuclear Assault? I've got to hear that! OMG! :D All I've ever had of theirs (since the 80's) is Handle With Care... which IMO is a pivotal and underrated Thrash record.

You dont know what your talking about.

Taliesyn some of the heaviest music ever?
Cummon.

3rd "Deep Purple" (Bosch cover) is their best - most proggy - lp ever. Certainly NOT stadium rock.
Since when was some 6 minutes of chamber, stadium rock?

...
Okay - I had to edit this. On re-reading you stated AFTER the 3rd.

Yup the 1968 "Deep Purple" was a winner. And I agree that the original Deep Purple was a much more progressive but poorer band.

As far as covers go:
From 1972, Johnny Rivers, LA Reggae: Brown Eyed Girl

Santana did a decent cover of Fleetwood Mac's Black Magic Woman.

Bad covers? Anything by William Shatner or Leonard Nimoy...

...or Limp Bizkit...

I felt that Machine Head's cover of Massage in a Brothel by the dreary Sting was just brilliant. But I think I may have been in a minority of one.

Oh yeah. Shatners version of Pulps 'common people' is hilariously cheesy, as is his legendary 'lucy ITSWD'

This Mortal Coil covering 'Song to the Siren' (Tim Buckley)
Low covering 'Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me' (Smiths)
Divine Comedy covering 'Radioactivity' (Kraftwerk)
Trashcan Sinatras covering 'To Sir, With Love' (???)

Gotta say I like the Sid Vicious "My Way". If you get the chance, see the un-censored music video where SV guns down members of the audience.

Cowboy Junkies version of "Sweet Jane" is on my personal list, but seems out of place to the harder rocking content here so far.

Saxon

Possibly the loudest band I have ever heard. Given the size of the venue and the PA they brought. Doncaster hospital never had so many perforated eard drums in one night. Awesome stuff.

Back on track I'll back Bauhaus 'Ziggy Stardust' in there.

One of the worse, Metallica 'So what'. not a patch on the original

Sorry for coming late with this reply. If the Saxon gig was at the Top Rank 1980? I left after support band Tigers of Pantang as I had an early start next morning down a coal mine.

Loudest gig for me was West Bruce and Laing Newcastle City Hall 1973?

Back to subject:

I have to agree with Hendrix and All along the watchtower as best ever cover.

I also enjoy 'Next' by Sensational Alex Harvey Band (cover of Scot Walker translation of Jaques Brel song).

My favourite version of 'Baby please don't go' (Big Joe Williams I believe) is by Budgie. Also, I much prefer 'Breadfan' by Budgie to any cover version.

Metallica murdered Breadfan AND Crash Course in Brain Surgery by Budgie, but unwittingly introduced an entire generation to the delights of the Welsh rockers.

Almost forgot about SAHB's excrutiatingly ott version of Delilah.
