guitarded wrote:'Black Sabbath' - Black Sabbath (any list w/out this is suspect)

'My Aim is True' - Elvis Costello (First and Best)

'Look Sharp!' - Joe Jackson (You don't listen to enough Joe Jackson.)

...and if we're doing more than 3 I have to give 'Let it Be' - The Replacements and 'The Clash' - The Clash a mention.

O.k., you have persuaded me to go and listen to Black Sabbath - trying to find out what they have in common with JJ :) .

I can't consider Exposure a debut, seeing as how Fripp is basically to King Crimson what Trent Reznor is to Nine Inch Nails. Great album, anyway.

Boston deserves a spot in this category. An album completely devoid of filler that was recorded and mixed by hand in a basement. Winner!

The Clash is a good pick. Talk about starting with a bang.

I think this thread has become a sort of ongoing list, so I'll add a few that haven't been mentioned. Pink Flag and My Aim is True were already listed, so I've got to think hard here:

The Sea and Cake (1994. The band started out sounding like they'd been around for years)

The Vapors - New Clear Days

The Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame

'New Clear Days' is an overlooked gem. Front to back, just awesome.

But you couldn't get it in 2 x 10" Format with a 'Look Sharp!' Button.

...also, 'Danzig' was a great call.

I still play it several times a year. A good one to spring on younger folk...

I feel that this thread is worthy of a resurrection - 12 pages of some good stuff. How about (adding to the already phenomenal list):

Bjork - Debut - always dug her voice.
Tool - Undertow
Jeff Buckley - Grace (already mentioned, but deserves reiteration)
Weezer - Weezer (aka 'the blue album' - still looking for an original pressing of this to go with my green and red - wasn't released on vinyl in the US)

Yes, these are great! I've only owned Led Zep 1 in the past few years, and I was amazed!

I've owned the Jimi H for years, and didn't realise it was his debut!

And King Crimson! As young teenagers we asked a young shop assistant to play this for us, just to see her reaction to the cover. We weren't disappointed!

Now for best 2nd albums, I'd nominate Jethro Tull's "Stand Up" !

Besides the Who, Stones, Doors and Hendrix already mentioned I think the Pretenders debut was a great LP.
