Even "Wellington's Victory", really??? I even think the composer would agree to lose this. I like the sound of muskets and cannons as much as the next guy (perhaps more) but this is pretty weak stuff. Neither "Herbie the K" on DG nor Dorati on Mercury could make sense of this.

Have you still not heard the Requiem? I reccomend the Bohm and the Vienna on DG, there are others. All of Beethovan but not even late Mozart? I find that odd.

Hahaha... you smart guy! ;)

I'd rather hear "Wellington's victory" over most of Mozart's "divertimentos" (which is Italian slang for "elevator music")

Well, actually i love the Mozart "Coronation Mass", it is great. And yesterday i listened to the "Jupiter" symphonie (# 41?) and the last movement is very very good.

But considering the whole of their output, the originality and the emotiveness, Beethoven stands head and shoulders above that Mozart guy, who i feel definitely overrated, the precursor of Muzak. I could put many composers above him: Bach, Bartok, Debussy, Brahms, Schubert, Stravinsky, to mention some...

Too overrated. But then i haven't heard Mozart's operatic work.

Great topic..... :) and a lot more realistic than the must have 1 vinyl for desert island.... #-o

In no particular order:

1. Jimi Hendrix, Are You Experienced? w/ Red House if it exists on vinyl
2. The Doors, The Doors
3. John Coltrane, A Love Supreme
4. Allman Brothers Band, Live At Filmore East
5. B.B. King, Completely Well
6. Joni Mitchell, Court & Spark
7. Grateful Dead, Live / Dead
8. Ludwig Von Beethoven, 9th Symphony
9. Miles Davis, Kind of Blue
10. The Beatles, Rubber Soul or Revolver

+ to be interchanged with perhaps #2 and #10 depending on mood..... and what I can grab at the flip of a coin:

Little Feat, Dixie Chicken
Jethro Tull, This Was
Frank Zappa, Hot Rats
Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Nothing But The Water <--- :-k :-k I don't think this was ever issued on vinyl..... :-k :-k

Happy top tenning........ :)

Fred and other list's 10s are now put on the "fill" list....... :)

Fred, Gimme Shelter isn't an album; it's a song from the album Let it Bleed. You could include Let It Bleed in your list.

I don't think I've ever heard the stereo but I have With the Beatles in stereo and the mix is unlistenable - must get a mono pressing. I think the mono is meant to be a better mix as is the case with a lot of albums of that era. I prefer Sgt Pepper in mono too.

DS

With the Beatles in Stereo is, agreed, terribly, but the stereo mix of Revolver is pretty good. Its just the albums up until about help that were bad. Having said that, Yellow Submarine in Stereo isn't a good one...

This is tricky. I reserve the right to replace any album in my selection at any time, with the exception of Astral Weeks and Physical Graffiti (both are just too good)!

Astral Weeks - Van Morrison
Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin
Horses - Patti Smith
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Wild Wood - Paul Weller
Exile on Main Street - Rolling Stones
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Aqualung - Jethro Tull
The Joshua Tree - U2
New York - Lou Reed

I could go on and on with Steve Winwood, more Zep, Sex Pistols, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, John Coltrane...etc, but alas we're allowed only 10!

Well, since we're entering into classical territory...

Prokofiev - The Love for Three Oranges (suite)
Prokofiev - Piano Concerto #1
Stravinsky - Petroushka, Firebird, Rite of Spring
Beethoven's late quartets (op. 132, 135, etc)
Beethoven's 9th - Herbert Von Karajan 1977 recording
Beethoven's 5th
Beethoven's 7th
Beethoven's piano sonatas (all)
Beethoven's EVERYTHING
Mozart NOTHING
...

Erik Satie - Sarabandes, Gymnopedies, Nocturnes
Bartok - Everything including the Concerto for Two Pianos, Percussion and Orchestra
Brahms - all works for 4-handed piano

...

And for a forgotten, stunning masterwork:
Chausson - Concert for Violin, Piano and String Quartet op 21.
This one is a winner.

Hi Flavio
I'm glad we are in accordance (on this one, at least!! :D ). Yep, love Beethoven (managed to find the full set of symphonies on DGG Karajan, for £6 yesterday), and totally agree about Mozart. Obviously not a composer to play on a Lenco  But do people really need an idler drive to appreciate serious music? Probably
