10 records you must have?

Postby paulvwells » 24 Mar 2009 20:43

I only have a small record collection (50 or so) and it got me thinking what 10 records would you say every vinyl enthusiast should have? I have come up with this list (in no particular order!!) the ones with a * next to them are records I have yet to buy!!

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Beatles - Sgt. Peppers (in mono)
Queen - A kind of magic
Mike Oldfield - Tubular bells
Nirvana - Nevermind *
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours *
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 *
The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
Beatles - Revolver
Zombies - Odessey and Oracle*

I know I have missed out many important albums, but this is the choice I would have if I only had a house with the space for 10 records!

Hi,
and here's from the "classical" "must haves
1- "Mozart Clarinet Concerto, Gervase de Peyer, London Symphony, Peter Maag, conductor. Decca/London. Reissued recently.
2- Fritz Wunderlich, tenor. Singing Mozart (super special interpreter), Beethoven, Schubert, Shumann, Rossini...anything he chose to sing publicly. Entirely special.
3- Beethoven 9th Symphony- Chicago Symphony and chorus, conducted by Georg Solti, on Decca London. Recently reissued on two LPs.
4- Beethoven Third Symphony. Berlin Philharmonic, H. von Karajan. Recently reissued, from the DGG label.
5- Puccini- La Boheme. Renata Tebaldi, Carlo Bergonzi, Ettore Bastianini. on Decca-London. Oh, special ensemble values, special vocal conditions of all, and very clear sound.
6- Verdi- Rigoletto. There are many excellent ones. I love three more than the rest: (A) Gobbi, Callas, di Stefano, Tullio Serafin conductor. (B) Merrill, Kraus, Moffo, conductor Georg Solti in an electrifying rendition. (C) Leonard Warren, Jan Peerce, on RCA monaural.
-7- Presenting Marilyn Horne, mezzo soprano. Decca-London, Richard Lewis conducting. Oh, such a special display of vocal prowess!
-8- Presenting Luciano Pavarotti- Verdi and Donizetti arias. The voice and artistic values were at their very best and special.
-9- Beethoven Piano concerto No. 4. Ivan Moravec, pianist. Orchestra of Vienna Musikverein, conducted by Martin Turnovsky. Special illumined understanding between pianist and director. Good sound. Special feel for Beethoven, (no nonsense, forceful or poetic where pertinent) one could imagine Ludwig was conjured for this recording.
Available now in CD reissue, and some rare offerings in eBay. Utterly special "fourth". Recorded originally by Connoisseur Society, initial release in 45 rpm.
-10- Stravinsky, Rite of Spring. Columbia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stravinsky. On the Columbia six-eye label. Reissued in CD also.
Regards,

Reissued on LP? Where can one find that? It's one of my favorites, but I don't have a recording of it.

Hi Nathan,
this reissue by Speakers Corner Records is available from any of their dealers, such as Acoustic Sounds, Music Direct, or Elusive Disc, among others. Warning: this is my "acid test" LP for cartridge adequacy on treble tracking. It IS a bright recording, which will sound GLORIOUS with excellent treble trackers, but will sound edgy and uncomfortable with lesser treble trackers. Your Shure M91 E would be a good choice, as well as the somewhat soft M97xE. Audio Technicas need not apply...too bright and edgy for this recording (from personal experience). Softer cartridges are best on this recording...and GLORIOUS it is when played well. ADC XLM-III is good also, if you can get a good working one, and also the V-15-5, or a (very scarce) Stanton 881S, or the Dynavector 17D3, or Blue Angel Mantis.

Here dey is:

Who's Next The Who
Rubber Soul The Beatles
Court and Spark Joni Mitchell
Folk Singer Muddy Waters
Thick as a Brick Jethro Tull
Between the Lines Janis Ian
Crosby , Stills and Nash Crosby, Stills and Nash
Requiem/Exultate Jubilate Wolfgang Mozart
on Seraphim Philharmonia
Orchestra
Pearl Janis Joplin
Moving waves Focus

Now, mind you, this is not necessarily the "best" or anything like that, but the musical range and the sonics along with the beauty of some of these recordings render them invaluable to enthusiasts. If you had asked what recordings anyone who wants a compendium of the best of blues, rock and roll, folk or what have you, the list would have been different. These recordings can give a taste of the wide range of what is possible and can show what a recording that was made with great care throughout the entire process can sound like. It can also show how emotion can be captured and rendered unto plastic for enjoyment later by someone who wasn't even at the original event. Unfortunately, there is inherently a lot of limitation in such a small choice. A lot of music will have to be left out, no matter who is making the list. Life involves tough choices, eh?
Music isn't an escape from life, it's one of the reasons to be alive in the first place!

Pearl Janis Joplin

Nice. :) That's almost the perfect Joplin album, but it lacks Ball and Chain. I'd have to go with the Greatest Hits album to get a complete Joplin fix.

That's my ten and I'm sticking to it. These LP's are mainstays in my collection. I play them for my own pleasure and to show off my gear when I have guests over. I'll never get tired of hearing any of this music. There's 3 doubles here. That's just more music to listen too. Most of these are also outstanding recordings.
