J. Brahms -

Symphony No. 3, Berlin Philharmonic, Karajan, from the boxed set DG 133/36 (nice 1960's period DG Tulips, the '70s - '80s versions are not-so-hot)

Symphony No. 4, London Symphony Orcestra, Abbado, from box set DG 2221067 (International Preview Society pressing from Italy - somewhat rolled off highs)

Violin Concerto, Isaac Stern, Philadelphia Orchestra, Ormandy, Columbia Masterworks MS 6153 (not a huge fan of Columbia Masterworks sound, great performance however)

Yo pivot:

Third movement of that Brahms concerto with Stern has power like a steamroller. My set has Beethoven violin concerto too. Don't get too close to the speakers or the heat will burn your eyeballs!

Also have a slightly more refined version with Zino Francescatti. Eyeballs and arm hair are safe with this one.

And good luck from the old guy with no arm hair anymore (singed off when eyeballs got heated up),

I'm not really that into ELP, but I LOVE Tarkus! Also, that album cover has to be one of the goofiest things I've ever seen!

Mine is just the single disc. Sound is 'okay' for a Masterworks. I continue to be amazed that Columbia gave very good sound for rock/pop/jazz but did not seem, for the most part, to get classical right.

Agree on the performance. Wish I had heard Stern live at some point.

How is this? I only have Into the Labyrinth although I'm listening to some earlier stuff to see if I like it. How does this compare to Into the Labyrinth (my only reference so far).

Thanks
