Alan Parson Project typically are all albums that flow along as a themed set of songs. Definitely Pink Floyd albums tell a complete story through the songs on the albums, the Endless River being the latest example. The Beatles, of course , were early masters of the album as a collection of individual and linked songs telling a story. Overall, I would have to give the nod to Pink Floyd, especially the Wall and The Final Cut, followed by APPs I Robot and The Who's Tommy. As with all such list, best is quite subjective, and virtually all suggestions will deserve merit and consideration. We have been blessed by some great artists and their concept albums. =D> =D> =D>

Pete Townshend: Psychoderelict
This is, in my personal opinion, his masterpiece concept album and rock opera! And it has a lot of tongue in cheek humour!

Alan Parsons: Try Anything Once
While it may appear the songs are not related, listen to the whole shebang again, and it all makes sense, and it meshes together!

Marillion's third album and my personal favourite all time LP is Misplaced Childhood with the tracks flowing into each other with no breaks.

Recommended.

Wow! I hear exactly what you mean. This is a great album I just finished listening in its entirety. You just turned me onto a band that I never heard of, and never got any air play where I grew up. I would have been all over this in the 80's. I really hate that two of the biggest rock stations in the US, at the time, didn't play there music. This is an album I need in my collection. Thanks Tonybro!

I'm a BIG Marillion fan, especially the first 4 albums. I have 6 copies of the Misplaced Childhood album, one signed. I have loads of their 12" singles with the picture discs to match.

Once Fish left he did some great solo albums - check them out too. 👍

Marillion's "Misplaced Childhood" sticks out for me in terms of flow, almost seamless from the first note to the fade-out at the end.
All About Eve "Touched By Jesus"
Fields Of The Nephilim "The Nephilim"

The Kinks....yes, haven't played any for a while, but very much themed album artists, and a good story line through out typical of their albums. Scheduling a play for a day soon. Thx for the reminder! 8)

Many Jethro Tull albums suddenly come to mind as being a story set to music as well....in addition to Thick as a Brick. Great thread....some rediscovery of albums going on here.

I'm gonna nominate The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" and Stevie Wonder's "Songs In The Key Of Life" to my personal Top 10! :D

And maybe...just maybe...The "Blade Runner" soundtrack from Vangelis... :-k

Worth mentioning Neal Morse here too I think!
Ex Spocks Beard and a seemingly never-ending source of classic prog rock, sometimes with a 'Christian' message built in?

Take these two 3LP sets for example ... starting off with music inspired by John Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress

I think you might be surprised at the time and effort that goes into sequencing. Sometimes it's obvious and sometimes it takes a few tries. Some artists take a lot of care with sequencing. Space between songs too.
