Jazz Recommendations

Postby Hermionediamond » 25 Jun 2012 22:18

Recently I've been listening to John Coltrane's Ballards and some Dave Brubeck which I've really enjoyed. Rather embarrassingly my listening has been on Apple Lossless digital format streamed wireless via an iPad through an Arcam rCube  [-X

Nevertheless, I've very much enjoyed the music and I want to buy some vinyl. Jazz is something I know very little about so I'm turning to my learned friends on VE for advice on which artists, albums and labels I might look for?

cool, I am a jazz newbie myself

you can find Time Out pretty easily as it sold very well originally. Sounds great on vinyl.

the ECM label puts out a lot of interesting jazz, and their records are usually pretty inexpensive. They are fun to explore.

I really like Miles Davis' mid-to-late sixties stuff produced by Columbia (Sorcerer, Nefertiti, Filles De Kilimanjaro, In a Silent Way). It is accessible enough yet complex enough to stay with you. I never tire of hearing it, which is as good a recommendation as I can give for any music. If you study the various artists who played with Miles Davis you will go far in the world of jazz.

A great gateway into more modern jazz or fusion is Weather Report.

Jazz recommendations:
Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew
Most of the musicians who play on these two albums went on to form their own bands and become stars. Music from any of them is usually very good and when it isn't it's superb.

Sonny Rollins, Saxophone Colossus, Way Out West. My favorite sax player.

You can't go wrong with just about any Blue Note, Prestige or CTI recording.

There is so much to discover. You guys are in for some real treats.

IMO most "smooth jazz" isn't Jazz and should be called "Black urban music".

J.J. Johnson is a personal favorite. Did amazing things with a trombone.

Johnny Hodges has some great albums

Miles Davis. I prefer his work from the 50s/ early 60s, but even his last work is good.

And here are mine from a similar thread:

If you are interested in jazz, I'd suggest these as must-haves, starting with the most well-known titles. Obviously I couldn't stop at ten, even avoiding swing, fusion, ECM and other genres. Still this should get one started:

The Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Out (or At Carnegie Hall)
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue (or Sketches of Spain)
Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section
Cannonball Adderley: Somethin' Else
Shelly Manne and His Men at The Blackhawk, Vol. 1
Herbie Mann: Live at The Village Gate
Bill Evans: Everybody Digs Bill Evans (or The Village Vanguard Sessions)
The Modern Jazz Quartet: Django (or The Last Concert)
Wes Montgomery: Smokin' at The Half Note (or Full House or Bumpin')
John Coltrane: A Love Supreme
Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus
Jimmy Smith: Midnight Special
Lee Morgan: Sidewinder
Horace Silver: Song for My Father
Kenny Burrell: Midnight Blue (or Blue Lights)
John Handy: Recorded Live at Monterey Jazz Festival
Henry Mancini: Music from Peter Gunn
Chick Corea & Gary Burton: Crystal Silence
Jim Hall: Concierto
Lenny Breau: The Velvet Touch of Lenny Breau - Live
Grant Green: The Complete Quartets With Sonny Clark (or Idle Moments)
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: A Night in Tunisia
Joe Henderson: Inner Urge (or Mode for Joe)
Herbie Hancock: Takin' Off (or Empyrean Isles)

and a few jazz vocals:
Billie Holiday: Lady in Satin
Sarah Vaughn: Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown
Ella Fitzgerald: Clap Hands, Here comes Charlie
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong: Ella & Louis

I apologise if this topic has been touched on before.

Thanks for your recommendations. I'm now on the hunt for a few albums and will let you know how I get on :D

Dave Brubeck countdown time in outerspace is a nice album, Oscar peterson and clark terry one on one is quite good, stan getz, charlie bird to name a few.
I like some of the more avant garde stuff.
Best thing is to use the all music guide and you tube to listen to a few artists before you commit to buy.

Today I found myself with half an hour to spare between meetings in Manchester so I called into Picadilly Records. Found a new release of Kind Of Blue on 180g 'audiophile' Stereo Fidelity vinyl. I'm not a great beleiver in the 180g thing but bought it anyway.

WOW - side one is magical. Not just the music but also the sound quality. I'm now hooked. Turned over to play side two and the vinyl clicks and clicks and clicks and then sticks. How disappointing. I moved the needle to the middle of the side and the thing still clicks but does not stick. The music is spellbinding but I now must make another trip into Manchester to take the thing back.

Have you tried cleaning your new LP and the mat on your TT? It's possible it picked up dust and dirt from the mat on the platter. This could help explain why one side sounds good.

FWIW: I, and I suspect many others always wash and vacuum every new LP prior to that first play.

There are lots of great artists and collections on that list, but many of them (particularly from earlier eras) are not going to be on vinyl -- or will be exceedingly rare and/or expensive. (Speaking of, can anyone recommend a comprehensive and good vinyl pressing of the Hot Fives and Sevens?)

I will second those who've recommended anything on Blue Note or ECM. You can be pretty certain that anything on those labels will be quite good, or at least worth hearing, and be recorded very, very well.

Some individual favorites of mine, from those labels or otherwise, are:

Charles Mingus, "Mingus Ah Um"
John Coltrane, "My Favorite Things"
Air, "Air Lore"
Chick Corea, "Return to Forever"
Miles Davis, "In A Silent Way"
Ornette Coleman, "The Shape of Jazz to Come"
