New Member - Dual 1019 Headshell Issue

Postby msmills » 09 Aug 2012 16:07

Hello. I am a new member. Trying to get back in to vinyl. I recently purchased a 1019 & a 1219. Working on the 1019, I got it sounding great, but now I cannot seem to keep the cartridge mount from falling off of the headshell. Sometimes it will stay on for a while, but right now I cannot seem to get it to stay on. Does this mean that I probably need a replacement? This site has been a huge help in getting me started, and I appreciate any suggentions.

Welcome to VE!

There is a lever under the headshell carrier with a formed tab that swings under a lip at the front end of the plastic cartridge mount to lock it into place. The plastic lip may be worn or broken. Can you take a closeup photo and post it?

Thank you for your response. I think the plastic area that supports the lever is slightly worn. I can't figure out how to attach the photo I took. I pet a rubber band around it and that seems to be working OK, but not a good solution. I will attach photo if you can guide me through that. tHANKS.

Yo msmills:

1019 is similar to other Duals. The cartridge slide is held in place by the silver arm grip located on top of the headshell. You take the cartridge slide, and put the end toward the arm in first. You then push cartridge slide straight back toward the arm pivot. You should then be able to raise front end of slide and it should go right into proper position and stay in place. You then take the little silver grip that you use to pick up arm and push that clockwise toward front of arm until it locks in place, about 90 degrees opposed to the head. This will engage the slide lock. Check the Dual 1019 manual found on this website. You will see how headshell is installed. It's easy, but you must be careful.

I just thought of something. In order to take the cartridge slide out, you rotate the silver arm grip toward the back of arm. The silver grip will rotate sideways, and the cartridge slide will come out if you push slide straight toward back of arm. If the silver arm grip is at 90 degrees to headshell, then the lock will keep the slide from going fully into position, and it will tend to fall out. You must have silver head grip rotated fully toward rear of arm for headshell to go into proper position, and this may be what is causing your headshell to not go into arm.

It may be difficult to understand what I am saying if you are inexperienced with these old Duals. I believe that the manual, located in Library under Dual, will have pictures to help.

And good luck from that visually-oriented old head remover,

Joe Z.

Hi msmills,

Just a last word: be extremely careful when fiddling with the 1019 headshell holder.
It has become so scarce that, if you're happy enough to find one on e-bay, you will have to pay astronomical prices. Some old 1019 get cannibalized every day for their difficult to find parts: headshell holder is one of them.
Remember it's only old plastic and can be very fragile.
Also take a few minutes to inspect and clean the contact blades on top of the shell and underneath the tonearm: they should be shiny (supposed to be silver coated), so the best is to treat them softly. Alec suggests using a pencil eraser, I would use a bit of Deoxit as well. The connexions here are a weak point of the first Dual's.
Good luck and enjoy this fabulous TT, one of the best amongst Dual's productions.

Cheers,

Hugh.
