Dual 1219 arm goes back and forth instead of stopping the TT

Postby Jacques51 » 03 Jul 2012 12:04

All,

I took a Dual 1219 that used to work decently out of my storage area, it hasn't been used for about two years and now it refuses to stop. Either by activating the "Stop" lever or automatically at the end of a record, the arm goes up, returns to the armrest, goes down, then when you'd expect the sound of the switch-off, the arm goes back up, moves to the center of the platter, returns to the armrest, etc., etc.

Only by holding the arm when it's on it's rest is the motor switched off.

After getting the turntable out of the plinth, the stop function has worked a few times correctly, but after that the odd behavior was back :( Shaking the TT a few times hasn't helped, either...

As far as I can see, the "Steuerpimpel" (which is often the cause for misbehavior) looks OK, the other functions do work all right, though I haven't tried to change records (not really interested).

Anyone a good idea on what's behind the behavior? The service manual doesn't mention this kind of situation...

Thanks for any hint!

Are you sure the knob/slider for multiple records is set correctly? It should be pushed to the back. It sounds like it might be the issue, since its not sensing the stacking spindle. I know the reverse occurs when the stacking spindle is attached but knob slider is on single. it just goes up/down and stops
Or maybe some parts got stuck and needs lubrication.

Most likely, your cam follower lever-#254 in the service manual (available on this website in the library)-is stuck due to dried up grease. Or the lever which actuates it is stuck or sluggish. Clean off the old grease with alcohol and that should fix it. Cut narrow strips of file cards or business cards. Soak one end in alcohol and slide that under the parts in question. Repeat until clean.

All,

Thank you for your advice, it is much appreciated. After taking this TT out of the console and turn it upside down for inspection, I just removed some sticky (or even hardened) grease here and there, and behold! it now behaves in a completely civilized way. It all looks a complicated set of levers, rods and cams. I must say I prefer their simplicity of the few Thorens TTs I happen to own. The idler drive may also generate a bit more rumble than a belt-driven TT, but that is a different issue.
