Using Dual 1229 for quadraphonic sound

Postby maspadaro » 22 May 2012 14:42

Morning everyone. I have a question about using the Dual 1229 for quadraphonic sound.
I am aware that I will probably need a Shabata stylus to listen to CD-4 LP's but has anyone in the Dual community use the Dual TT for quadraphonic sounds?
Is there something I need to look for or be aware of?
I have a pioneer QX 8000A and I just bought a Panasonic demodulator for the CD-4 LP's.
I know I can go to quadraphonic website, but since I am going to use my Dual I thought this might be a better forum to ask.
Regards,

Yes, the two concerns are having a cartridge installed which is CD-4 capable and low capacitance table wiring.

Since Dual sold the separate 1229Q table specifically for CD-4, it may be that the wiring capacitance in the regular 1229 may be undesireably high for successful CD-4 reproduction. However, it could also be that it is fine.

The only ways to find out is to either measure the capacitance with a suitable meter (look for 100pf or less) or just try it. If the carriers seem weak and the demodulator has trouble locking onto the carriers, it is an indication of high capacitance wiring before the demodulator. If you get good results, all is good.

Good luck!

Thank you Doug. I will test the cables, I might get lucky, but I assume I will need a 1229q. Are there any other Duals that are good for quadraphonic listening.
Just want to look at options. I like the sounds of the Dual Turntables.

Ok so I need a bit of information of "how to/where". If I want to rewire one of my turntables for quad (specifically CD-4)where do I get the wire and which type of wires. Also what else do I need to change? the RCA female Plugs, the antiskating oval?
I am aware that I will need to make it as short as possible to keep the capacitance low. Tried to find a link in the forum but could not, if there is please let em know.
thank you
