dual 1228 platter removal?

Postby beermunk » 19 Sep 2004 21:46

first, hello to all! great forum here. unfortunatly after searching i can't find anything that would help me with my problem.

i have a dual 1228 turn table, and the platter is rubbing on something when it's turning. i found the service manual, but i can't find anything in there on how to remove the platter to clean and re-lube it.

it's crazy, i can build a computer with my eyes closed, but heck if i can figure out how to get the platter off this turn table?! any help is apreciated![/list]

The 1228 is an idler drive TT. Most idler driven platters were held in place with a notched"C clip" at the bottom of the spindle. Typically the clip has a slot on one side which makes it possible to insert a flat blade screwdriver and pry it away from the spindle.

Be aware however that those clips were designed to be very springy and care must be taken that it doesn't go flying when you remove it. Trust me you would be astounded how difficult those little beggars can be to find after taking flight.

I had a 1229 about 25 years ago. It came with a conical black plastic tool-thingie to release the platter after popping out the spindle. IIRC, all it did was spread the clip out of a groove, something you could do with a couple of small screwdrivers and some patience. But if you have a small, unidentifiable piece of plastic lying around, now you know what it's for!
