Dual CS 1257 running backwards...

Postby revmaynard814 » 02 Jun 2012 22:11

Hello all!

Just a quick question for all you Dual pros out there. I recently obtained a CS 1257 that I rescued from a tack shed at a horse arena. It sounds great! I had to replace the hardwired phono cable with a new one as rats had chewed through the left channel wire. The problem that I am having is occasionally the fly wheel will spin in reverse. I have found that if I nudge it in the proper clock wise rotation when I select start the machine will fire up in the right direction. I've found in other forums for other brands that there is supposedly is a capacitor that once replaced will remedy this issue. But I would prefer some "Dual-cific" info.

Thanks in advance,
Geoff

Well, you need to lift the drive out of its plinth, then follow the power cable into a little black box, which contains a little pcb that has also got the main switch on it. On that pcb you should see three caps - two of these (C2 and C3, which should be 0.33 µF and 0.68 nF, both 250 V types) are the phase shifter caps, which usually are responsible for your problem. But it wouldn't be a bad idea to also swap C1 (10 nF, 250 V - and at least X2 safety class!), which is the anti-sparking cap for the main switch, because these usually die sooner or later anyway (and often do that with quite a bang, leaving a rather nasty stench...).

Greetings from Munich!

P.S.: C3 may be missing in some exemplars - basically it's only intended for 60 instead of 50 Hz operation, but nevertheless doesn't seem to disturb the latter...

Cool thanks! I'll give that a try. It will however be a challenge to source the capacitors locally as "Radio Shack" seems to only sell cell phones and SD cards anymore. Thank God for the Google!
