How Annoying...

Postby jc_the_trucker » 28 Apr 2012 14:32

After 335,418 miles of constant vibration due to poorly maintained highways, my truck's front driver side speaker has picked up the most obnoxious rattle.

Now the ultimate question...how do I want to lose what's left of my sanity? Listen to ruined music or no music at all? Hopefully I don't develop terrible road rage and push someone in a ditch.

jc_the_trucker,

This is just sharing, and by no means a suggestion. I've driven close to 70,000 miles without a single bit of music in my SUV, since the music system died ( the SUV is going on 198,000 miles now). No radio, no CD, no tape. Nothing! The only sounds I hear are the sounds of traveling, but not the brain gears shifting. At least, it lets me concentrate on smelling the cooling system's fluid, making sure there is no escape.

Good luck,

Good to hear that someone knows my pain! I'll survive, I've had this problem before in some of my previous cars. But I wasn't driving 10 hours a day either! The good news is that my next load is going home so I'll get to listen to a proper stereo in a couple of days.

I guess its time to listen to the Cummins Diesel Symphony Orchestra!

Why not buy some aftermarket car speakers? They don't have to be expensive, installation is pretty cheap, and if you are a DIYer, they're pretty easy to install.

I would certainly love to do that, but I must seek company approval to modify "their" vehicle.

The boss doesn't like it when you play with his toys. Funny, they expect you to live in it but they won't let you make it home.

Perhaps the screws holding the speaker are coming loose?

Cheers,
Alec

Definitely a possibility, a lot of the other screws have worked their way loose (I find a random screw every few weeks). I'll see what I can do with it, the driver door panel seems a little loose so maybe I can get it off to check....

Well so much for that idea. The little plastic fasteners around the outside edges were easily defeated by my pocket knife, but I don't have a torx bit large enough for the two screws that hold the middle of the panel. :? :?

Maybe I can find a security bit set at a truck stop.....

It is very unlikely that any company rep would ever look behind the speaker grilles. Pop out those trashy drivers, install something of quality, and replace the grilles - just make sure the grilles will fit the new speakers. Enjoy!

Have you considered a good boombox parked in the sleeper? There are actually some good ones out there.

Tip 1, Sears sells torx screwdriver style so you only have to buy the one that fits, you can also find socket type sets that aren't that all expensive. Tip 2 Put the boss in the truck and keep him in there for 30 min. while you crank the stereo, he may send it to the shop for you. Murphys law, if you do it yourself, you'll get a new truck the next week!! I was a transit bus driver for 36 years, a different bus every day and no radios, only the chatter of the passengers!! As luck would have it.... The shop at the truck terminal decided to play with it while I was at home this week. I tried to go back to work yesterday, and it seems they broke the EGR valve. It will be at Cummins until some time next week. They're trying to find me a new set of wheels as we speak. Either way, I'm happy because I just scored a back and forth from Tennessee to Florida pulling Amazon.com loads! No more snowy winters for me! Don't blame me for warped records please.

Double entendre anyone?

I just wish they'd figure out what they're doing...

This sitting around the house is fun, but it doesn't make me any money. No money means no new toys.... :(
