Alternative sub-chassis?

Postby cmfast » 12 Sep 2012 22:18

Has anyone seen, heard of, or tried making a sub-chassis out of wood?

I was looking at my early 2-motor XA where the bearing wells screw into the stamped metal T-bar, and thought I could easily make another out of say 1/2" baltic birch and put braces on the underside much like the inside of a guitar.

It would be light, rigid, and allow easy integration of any arm I wanted to retro-fit.

Thoughts?

Don't know of any wood AR chassis, but my CJ Walker turntables use hardwood, so it can be done.

Just to be clear, we're talking about SUB-chassis right? The T-bar suspension part that carries the platter and tonearm.

Tried to find pics of the insides of CJ Walker TT's and haven't found any yet that clearly depict the floating suspension. But I do gather that the designer's philosophy was to make as many components as possible out of organic materials. Ironically, as cabinetmaker I think the term "organic" is used loosely when it comes to particle board plinths, and "Tufnol" platters....LOL.

Regardless, I think that there's not much to lose in trying it other than having to cut the top plate for the new arm.

You might want to consider making a sub-chassis out of acrylic, like Merrill did with his early upgrades. Could be cut out by hand with a router, or if you can find the right plastics supplier, many of them will do CNC for not that much money.

Yeah, I thought of that. I do have a friend in the Plastics business. He has a CNC router and a laser setup. Plus he can get his hands on just about any kind of plastic easier than most pedestrians.

However, I am a cabinetmaker and so have an interest in seeing if a wooden one would have any benefit. Was hoping somebody had tried it and report.
