Vinyl Nirvana Site Upgrade

Postby ddarch » 14 Jan 2011 00:49

Hi all,

It's taken a few weeks, but the new site design is up. The navigation is still very similar, but the look, I think, is more "spiffy."

Thanks to Matt Spangler for the wonderful new banner, and to Andre Gagnon, my website developer.

Be sure to check out the AR Upgrade/Replacement page for a couple of new surprises.

http://www.vinylnirvana.com

Happy new year!

Dave

PS Oh yeah, if you find a dead link, email me at the site.

Dave,

Looks real good! Nice job.

There's some very impressive upgrade/replacements items too.

Dave: can you provide further intel on the motor? what are the enhancements/improvements over stock? any review feedback yet?

other recommended tweaks with this unit: e.g., dampening, vinyl screws etc....

thanks much,

Hi,

You can call George Merrill directly at his store if you want more detail than I have listed on the site. Kinda neat to think you can pick up a phone and talk to an audio legend!

http://www.gmanalog.com/

The major upgrade is the stainless steel shaft...it won't wear like the stock shaft and it's non-magnetic. Otherwise, all I can tell you is it is DEAD quiet and lacks that annoying even-when-off vibration many display

I am just waiting on a couple of mid-80's ARs to arrive, and I will be selling them WITH the GemDandy Motor installed. (I may start selling all of them that way.)

One reason I have reduced the price to $195 shipped for a while is to get a few more buyers and get the word out there. Don't wait too long....

Remember talking to George almost 20 years ago in Tennessee with the first set of AR upgrades. I still have my faxed orders and receipts from the Underground Sound. His protege, Anthony Scillia, did a fantastic job on my '84 AR (TTT)-- I drove him nuts with constant crazy ideas to try.

The pictures suggest the motor comes with wiring and a power supply (looks like a wall wart). Is this the case or is more like the typical Hurst replacements with just the wires coming from the motor?

It's DC, so yes, that's a walwart. (EDIT: It's 110v AC to 12v AC)

However, it is still integrated with the switch (but not the light.)

One review of new GEMDandy motor is in:

Dave,
Got the new motor on Saturday and installed everything yesterday... easy install ( I had watched your installation video before ordering which was quite helpful..thanks). The motor is definitely quieter and the new pulley is great...Ordering these new parts directly through your site is very convenient. All the effort you put into your site is much appreciated.
Thanks again,

Hmmmm....I was making some wrong assumptions

I was thinking it was low voltage AC Synchronous with an AC wall wart. If DC, how is the speed kept constant? I thought DC motors would drift off speed without some kind of feedback or other compensation.

Interesting. Any more details?

Sorry, you are right, it's 110v ac to 12v ac. NO DC.

(This is why George designed and had the motor built and not me!!)

Geez - no need to apologize!!

Easy assumption to make that a wall wart has DC output.

Got some videos up for installation of stud/spring kit and also for the new motor. You can find the links on my home page under "site news."

Hi David -

I followed your basic set-up video for refurbing my AR-XA and it's running super-smoothly now! Many thanks.
