Ultimate AR XA Restoration Guide?

Postby ddarch » 11 Jul 2012 15:39

Hi,

I was pleased to get an email from John Williams last night. A few years ago he sent a link to an AR XA restoration that was among the nicest I have seen. Well, John has taken on a second restoration, and this guide is even more comprehensive than before! Many thanks, John.

See the link on my AR DIY page below:

Excellent!
2 suggestions:
Use paint stripper to remove the mess from the platter.
Johnson's Baby powder ues corn starch, not talc.

Cheers,
Alec

Never though about using paint stripper on the platter, thanks for the idea.
The Johnson's Baby powder I used has talc according to the ingredient statement.
Here's a picture of it.

I suspect you have an old battle of baby powder. :) At any rate, it is something to watch for.

Hi Alex,

According to Johnson's web site their baby powder still uses talc.

I wonder if they used corn starch for a while but switched back to talc? :?

But it's a good point you brought up.

Excellent restoration guide ! I used the first on on two XA's and will use a couple of tricks in the newer guide on the next restoration I do - I especially like the tip on using armature wire from a computer fan. I had difficulty finding cardas wire several months ago; never thought about using armature wire - great idea !
