AR 77XB 50Hz Pulley dilemma

Postby palo2 » 29 May 2012 03:36

Hi,
Have just acquired a lovely AR77XB TT.
The usual problem (here in Australia)it is a 115V 60Hz 300RPM Haydon unit with a 60Hz pulley, therefore runs slow.
I am on the hunt for a 50Hz pulley to correct the speed problem, anyone out there have one for sale or know of an option!
I know Vinyl Nirvana has a motor upgrade of a low voltage motor, which I think would fix the speed/voltage/Hz problem, but it is out of my price range at the moment!
Will a different size belt be required if a 50Hz pulley is installed?

Also how difficult is it to rewire a Grace 707 from the DIN to the cartridge?

Help appreciated
Regards Palo

Eureka!
Dave has the copolymer pulley 50Hz pulley version in stock. It is also $95 plus shipping of $16.95USD
You little ripper now just got to work out the voltage step down.
Have also inquired about the belt to suit.
What a wonderful thing the internet is!!!!! especially up here in FNQ Australia.

Dave also has a copy of the old AR service instructions for rewiring a US spec XA to run on 220V. Not sure how the 20V difference between that and your line power is going to affect the table.

Thanks gkimeng,
Will definitely have a look at that, I guess once I have the 50Hz pulley on the TT I can then check the speed is correct via a strobe disk.
I am sure it will be OK to run on the AUS 240voltage as I bought a SONY PS250 Turntable in Germany (duty free) when I was about 14. This would have been a far more sensitive electronic TT and worked fine. If anyone knows if the AR TT has any problems on this 20volt difference let me know.

Dont know if this is all fixed right now but I want to get my UK originated AR The Turntable running again and I am in Canada. I really know nothing about how to achieve this and I posted another thread for help. Then I found this thread.
Is there anything we could swap?
Thanks

Hi Bex,
Manage to find out that the unit is a 240V capacitor conversion with the 50Hz pulley,
my problem was that the 50Hz strobe dics that I put on to check the speed, did not show up as what I didn't think about was that the light I was using was a compact florescent bulb. DUH so I changed it to an incandescent and all OK... Phew.
I guess your problem is to get a 60Hz pulley to match your motor spindle size and different capacitors to suit the 115volts for Canada.
Not sure if this is any help too you.
All the best in your worthy AR endeavors. If possible take some upgrade pics and post on this site for others.
