Rega P3-24 power supply in Japan

Postby neildeb » 05 Jul 2012 03:09

Hi there,
Please could you help out a total newbie and novice! I have recently moved from the UK to Japan (Tokyo) and have bought my P3-24 with me hoping that I would be able to find a replacement power supply here that I can use. Unfortunately the people we have spoken to in the big electric shops don't seem to be as helpful as we might have hoped. Does anyone know what we need to look for?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Doesn't Japan have a 60Hz electrical power frequency? If so, then a swap of power supplies won't fix your problems (as Europe runs on 50Hz); you'll also need a 60Hz pulley for the platter to go at the right speed.

Some of Japan is 60hz and some 50hz. Thankfully we are in a 50hz bit, so hopefully that shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for answering anyway.

Re using the turntable with Japan's 100-120 volt 50hz mains, I think you should tell Rega about your experience with the local shops before asking them (Rega) for advice. Please let us know what happens.

I was going to email Rega, but they don't seem to take emails personally. They refer you to your local dealer, and given that they have no representation at the moment in Japan that's a little bit difficult! I also though it wouldn't make much sense for me to ask a specifically Japanese question to a dealer in a different country. Does anyone have an email contact for Rega? Think contacting them direct would be the best idea.

The P#-24 motor is 24v AC, so you need a 24v AC power supply and the correct pulley for the AC frequency. If you have 50 cycle, you already have the right pulley from UK. If you are in a 60 cycle area, you need a 60 cycle pulley, which will be a bit smaller.

Cheers,
Alec

Thanks a lot. So will go and look for a 24v AC power supply and hopefully that should do it!
Thanks a lot for your help!
