A question about the arm on P5.

Postby Wozza » 05 Jun 2012 23:01

Hi.

I've got a quick question about the arm on the P5 I have just bought.

I've put some 3mm worth of shims under my arm today. After getting it all screwed in tight I looked at my arm straight down the line and I could swear it was off slightly to the right, like the tubing going to the headshell is moving ever so slightly to the right. I unscrewed it and reset it twice carefully but it still looks squiffy. I can't remember how it was before the shims #-o Maybe it was like that.

I don't want to mess about with it too much because I'm worried about ruining the threading for the screws.

I've taken a few photos a few mins ago but its too hard to tell because its night and I'm using my flash - it actually looks fine in the pics. Maybe its just me

Here a photo

It doesn't look too bad. I'll try and take a better photo in the daytime tomorrow.

It does sound good though :D Bass is a bit shy compared to my p3 24, but their is more details and finesse in the mix.

Cheers.

Well I tried it without the shims and it looks the same - just slightly off to the right. So its not the shims that is causing it.

Oh well now I know.

Having the arm sit parallel to the edge of the turntable is visually pleasing, but it doesn't matter if it's a bit off as long as the arm has enough free play to move across the record.
BTW: don't over-tighten the arm to the plinth. Just finger tight is enough for Rega arms.

What DH said is true for the arm being parallel or not to the side. Re: tightening the arm, you might want to experiment with tightness - frankly, I thought drilling through the plinth and attaching via screws and bolts was an improvement to the simple wood screw attachment finger tight or not. In any case, just make sure the arm equally tightened on all three screws and/or that the arm is as level as possible.

Is the emergency airbag deployed at the back end of the tonearm?

PS Congrats on the P5! You'll love it.

I have a P7 and the same holds true for the Rega: the arm sits slightly to the right of parallel. It was that way before I installed a shim and it is that way after I installed a shim. Obviously Rega designed it that way.
