Clearaudio Sigma: would it work?

Postby Etnier » 09 May 2012 15:40

I made an impetuous online purchase yesterday and am beginning to wonder about the mechanics of it all. I bought a closeout Clearaudio Sigma, an out-of-production MC which seemed to be well-regarded, and at quite low mass (for an MC) seemed to be a good match for Rega systems. It will be connected to my new Heed Quasar preamp. But look how tall it is! (...or does it just seem that way?)

VTA issues beyond those which might be shimmed??

Does anyone have experience with this cartridge, either with our gear or others?

IMPORTANT EDIT:
Amazingly, I now find strong indications the vendor sold me a used cartridge without stating it was such when they sold it to me. I am trying to sort all
that out, but would still much appreciate any impressions or technical notes concerning the Sigma (particularly in Rega arms).

Stating it's new, and reality used? Not cool!
When mounted is it pretty level in the arm when set up?
You should be OK, I think, I don't know the dimensions of that cartridge. Most are pretty close to each other.
Rega's cartridges are the exception being shortest, hence no shims required.

It's not that they stated it was new, it's that the ad let it appear as new without stating it was used.
I clicked on a "New and Used Specials" link and straight through to the item, which is not described as used.
On edit: Vendor replied "It’s a brand new cartridge. The wooden box it comes in has never even been opened (it still has the Clearaudio seal over it)."

That said, I really don't want to focus on this end of things, at least not now. As said, I'm in contact with them. At this point, I want to learn about the Sigma.

I appreciate your input on the height: it's ecnouraging news, although the Sigma still seems really high to me. I have not mounted it because I have not received it. Any further input from anyone much appreciated.

Here's another view of a Sigma, as shown in VE-member Riverview's gallery:
