Replacing wool/felt mat

Hi Mr Datsun,
I have one & at just 1mm thick I would put the 'Feel' between felt & Leather.
I use it on my Acrylic platter as I prefer the sound - it takes away the too analytical sound, giving a warmer feel to the music without loss of detail across the frequency range.

Thanks for the info, brassnwood. At 1mm it could be a good (if expensive) way of getting my arm more horizontal too.

The mats I tried were made of a soft mesh plastic that were cut into place mat shapes. They came in about 4 different colours. They were also about the same thickness as the Rega felt mat.Bear in mind that I live in Montreal and that even here I didn't always find the same mat material in different stores.

I am having an altogether different experience. Yesterday, I bought a 2mm cork sheet and cut a mat out of it. I played 'Smoke on the water' from a Japanese pressing of Deep Purple-Best Of twice - once with the cork mat and then with the original felt one. The good news is there was a significant difference between the two. The bad news though is that with the cork mat, it sounded muddier and less punchier than with the felt mat. I have read all the posts in this topic and don't know what is wrong - could the thickness (2mm as opposed to 3mm) be an issue ?

Interesting.
Is the cork flat? Straight cork or cork in rubber?

Cheers,
Alec

How do you distinguish between straight cork and cork in rubber. It looks like regular cork only.

There is gasket material that is cork in a rubber matrix.
You might try it with a weight.
Of course, there is no single answer to any question that will meet every situation.

Thanks Alec ! I guess mine is straight cork. My opinion has slightly changed after listening to other LP's as I found the bass has increased and the sound stage has expanded a bit. I just fear the cork mat does not leave any scuff marks on the vinyl. I have recently upgraded to a glass platter so do I need to upgrade the belt as well for compensating the additional weight ?
