I have always enjoyed finding a HiFi bargain and so I guess it was likely that at some point I would end up with Rega P3. As soon as I bought it and stuck on a record I new that I was in love with this table, mainly because it was fun and it made me and my wife dance around the living room! Since then I have upgraded to the point that the only part left is the motor. I didn't have to upgrade and tweak, but to me that is the true joy of the rega brand. The ability for amateurs to tweak and have fun technically with this amazingly simple TT design and get to sonic levels they have no right to be at vs cost spent. Of course regas can also lead to divorce, but that's another story ;)

Bought a Planar 3 fer me girlfriend as me wanted to introduce her to the joy of vinyl early 2000s.

Needed something simple & fuss free.

Its still in use & we are actually listening to Nuclear Assault's handle WIth Care on it now as our 3-year old headbangs along!

Contemplating some Michael Lim upgrades (anyone heard of him?) to give a boost in performance.

Hi...

The simplicity, looks & pricing of the TT was the main reason to get a REGA. Sold my P2 after two years for a mint condition Planar 3.

The Planar 3 has evolved  with Mike Lim's aluminum sub-platter, acrylic platter, silicone belting, aluminum spikes ( not from Mike Lim ) and the most significant upgrade is to the new P3-24V power supply. The speed is steady as she goes compared to the original power supply...which was running a tad bit fast. Measured via a strobe disc.

The music thats churned out of the souped up TT is controlled, has much more clarity and weight. =D>

Cheers :D

Started off with a Project debut in 1993 as a way of getting back into vinyl. Nothing wrong with that deck and it sparked my interest. In 1997 I wanted to upgrade and listened to a Planar 3 and was blown away by the difference.
Have been hooked on Rega ever since. I just love the musicality. I am into music much more than I am hi-fi and Rega really fit the bill.
After a long while it was time to pass on the Planar 3 and up-grade. Now i'm very happy with my RP6.

Bought my first one a planar 3 in 1997. It was a dissaster :x Lots of pitch stability problems. Than a RP6 with Exact in may this year. Lots of troubles with the Exact and also the RB303 arm. But now a P7 with Sumiko Blackbird and new Fono MM which are great. So at the end i am happy with Rega

@clearaudiolover - Did you buy your turntables/have them set up by a Rega dealer? I would say that this is the best way of avoiding a defective deck.

As to what made me buy a Rega TT: I had a windfall a few years ago and decided to buy a Rega P3-24 with elys 2 cartridgen- an audiophile friend had bought Rega, before heading off into the wonderful world of Linn. The P3/Elys came to about £700. I could have bought something better, but I usually go for the best bang for buck hifi items (less than £1000) and the P3 seemed to fit that criteria perfectly. (Besides I have a wife to placate, although she is now buying vinyl herself! (having discovered how good Bill Callahan sounds on vinyl)- And so are my kids)

New to me P3-24 on the way, I had to see what the hype was all about! I had a basic Technics SLBD10 in the late 80s and got back into vinyl this year have since owned a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon - Xpression III and then to a Music Hall MMF-5. I was all set on getting a MMF-7 but won an auctions for the P3-24. Anything to keep me from buying a VPI Traveler, well at least until my wallet can absorb the cost.

I read too much about Pro-Ject's bearing and motor problems.

I thought it was high time I had a brand new table after years of owning vintage Thorens.

Having said that, I didnt feel jumping in at the £1000 was sensible, even though that'll probably be what I end up spending after various upgrades (including phono stage).

I stared simple and cheap going for R3-24. Giving me, I hope, a very decent starting table with plenty of upgrade options.

I wanted to get into vinyl, and started off with buying a cheap used Technics off of Craigslist - DOA. Went to ebay, and bought another used TT - DOA again (due to the courier, not the seller's fault). Gave up and decided to buy new. After reading all the magazine reviews and a bunch of threads here, decided to check the Rega out. Initially I wanted to buy an RP3, but realized that I would eventually have "upgraded" the thing anyway, so jumped to RP6. If I had the means I would have gotten the RP 8. Since I don't know a whole lot about setting the TT up properly, decided to buy from a local Rega dealer, and at the same time support a small local business. I am very happy with the decision, and can focus on buying more records. :D

A Thorens ttable which was a rebadged Project table made me buy a Rega due to several trips back for repair. I bought my Rega 14 years ago due to it's reputation for reliability. I am still using my Planar 2 today. Of course is it still a Rega?

Deepgroove subplatter to replace the stock subplatter
Incognito rewire of the tonearm.
Michell Technoweight lowered counterweight.
Ceramic main bearing replacing the Rega steel and ruby bearing supplied for the Deepgroove.
RDC cones to replace two of the Rega feet.
Ringmat Goldspot mat instead of the felt mat.
Rega 24V motor upgrade
Rega TT PSU for speed switching at the touch of a button.

Now I am hoping someone develops the brace used in the latest Rega tables for older tables with the single nut mounting.

The table was a bargain in it's day and over the years as it has been tweaked to higher performance. This has been the most fun I have had with any component. The new motor should keep the vinyl spinning for 14 more years.

Nicely upgraded Planar 2.I bet it all sounds great too.
Enjoy it.
I don't think you will see the brace.
