May have to run in a bit?

Mine don't move, if they did they would come off, in the upward movement.
If you look at Rolf's superb picts here
http://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=30493&start=420
you can see the belts ride higher and not in the middle of the sub-platter.

Yea, the belts runs a bit lower than that of Rolf's, but they both move up and down a little, not enough to come off though. I'm wondering if this can deteriorate the sound quality somehow, due to speed instability.

You guys have gotten me interested in all this so I ran some tests on my p1 which is now 3 years and 4 months old. I use the glass platter and the stock subplatter.
With the black belt it runs at 3:00:36 and with the white it's 2:59:79. Both of these figures are really OK with me. To my ears the music sounds brighter with the black, but I want to have someone else give it a listen to see if they arrive at the same conclusion.

Hi Sandbah 92, if my deck would of run anywhere from 2:58.5 to 3:01.5 I'd be OK. I didn't find that the black sounded brighter though. In my opinion they sounded the same, perhaps with the white belt with more pitch stability.

I just fitted a white belt to my planar 3 which had been doing 32RPM.

It now does 33 and a bit. (I'm not that techy)

Happy happy happy.

Using Alec's method, I just checked my speed and it is bit fast.
105 turns in 3 min. No stylus in the groove.

With the white belt and TT-PSU, my RP3 is still ever so slightly slow. I only know that because I time it with a CD. But my ears don't notice it. I never tried it with the stock black belt, it had a visible joint.

The greatest strain on the belt (and motor) is getting the platter from 0 to 1rpm, so-to-speak. A gentle nudge of the platter before pressing the button can make a big difference over time (However, some platter materials don't respond well to finger grease, especially any kind of lacquered finish).

Changing records 'on the fly' also helps, although I've seen a few damaged styli caused by an out of control record (always ensure the spindle top is through the record hole before letting go...)

BTW, I'm curious about he variable quality of 'white' belts described here. Are all of these arriving in Rega packaging?

I bought a 'white' (tan) "Rega Turntable Belt Upgrade" in mid-November. This week it has started slipping badly: groans coming up to speed and can be all but stopped by my Discwasher, which wasn't the case before.

ON EDIT: A gentle cleaning with pure isopropyl on Kimwipes did the job, just as it would on tape deck rubber.

As with any drive belt, and clean the sub/platter (if no sub) while at it

Etnier. My theory is that using a Discwasher (I do) can not only slow/stop the platter but also stretch the belt. Since I bought a white belt, I now swap in the old black belt that I kept just for cleaning. I can only think that this lengthens the life of the white belt.

I habitually clean almost every side before play, (and I'm lazy, LOL) so that won't work for me, but thanks. The cleaning put things in order nicely.
