Sorry brianmch but I strongly disagree with you-if the measurements do not line up exactly then don't use one of the on-line protractors. You could try using several different printers to see if that helps-otherwise I would spend a few bucks and buy a protractor. It will be worth the extra expense.

A 2-point protractor has one dimension to match. Specify Actual size, or whatever percentage makes it right. Fit to space is unreliable.

I've tried every printer option that Microsoft will allow, I can make it even further away from the correct dimensions with no trouble :) I may just buy a proper protractor to add to my growing armoury of turntable tools, twiddling with vinyl is such fun!

Point me to a good, universal protractor for a few bucks. A Feickert is $250 and a clearaudio is nearly the same.

I had the same experience recently, couldn't print the VE Rega BW protractor with the correct measurements but was successful with KWillis' PDF (also available from V.E.). So you might give it a shot and try the KWillis protractor, it's a great tool.

Hi

There are plenty of perfectly good universal protractors available for not much money. They will certainly be more accurate than a downloadable one resized by the printer! I often use an old Ortofon plastic gauge (current version here: http://www.analogueseduction.net/alignment-tools/ortofon-cartridge-alignment-protractor.html), or a mirrored gauge made by Nagaoka/ Osawa from way back (this looks much the same: http://www.analogueseduction.net/alignment-tools/analogue-studio-mirrored-cartridge-alignment-protractor.html). The Polaris alignment gauge is also quite popular.

Of course, ultra-precision can easily cost £150 or more - the choice is yours, but I'm not sure I'd bother unless I'd bought a cartridge at a four-figure price! After all, what we're doing here is minimising (or optimising) horizontal tracking error, not reducing it to zero - you can't, on any pivoted arm.

HTH

I bought one from Kevin Willis for $50. It was designed for my table and includes Baerwald, Loefgren, Stevenson and Rega protractors all on one plastic plate. Here is his email address: kwillisjr@yahoo.com -great guy and allows you to try the different alignments sound.

Hope this helps

The purchased KWillis Protractor is excellent and very quickly easily used.
Well worth the $50 compared to some of the others out there costing more.
The "purchased" as opposed to the Down Load and print KWIllis Protractor is specific to your arm and does not need to be sight aligned from pivot to spindle for correct over hang which is next to impossible on a Rega arm and table. Just align to the printed grid and your good to go. All 4 alignments are included.
My table has never sounded better because of it.
The Protractor is good for any Rega arm mounted 222mm pivot to spindle distance.

Now that there are a few hours on my new cartridge I'm starting to notice the difference between it and the MP11 that preceded it. Playing a track from Fragile by Yes is all the evidence I need to know I'm in for a treat.

I've been listening to this album since it's issue in 1971 and have always had to wince a little when the last track on side one is playing, the high pitched vocals and the way they are treated with effects have always distorted uncomfortably in a couple of places. Not now though, it sounds crystal clear, I can hear gaps between the notes where before the distortion slurred them together.

In fact, the overriding difference is the "black" background that has magically appeared on everything I play, like a veil has been removed from in front of the speakers. I'm sure I read something similar on another tread that talked of being able to turn the volume up beyond the usual listening level to take advantage of the cleaner sound, or something like that, and that's exactly what it sounds like.

Anyway, onwards and upwards, time for some King Crimson.

The Denon DL-301 II is a fine LOMC, Reasonable price, twice the output of a 103.

Cheers,

Hi Alec,
I have a Rega P5 with Exact cartridge. Do u think Denon DL-301 II is a good upgrade. Also will I need spacers to mount this cartridge.
Thanks

If you have a phono preamp that can handle a low output moving coil cartridge, I can recommend the DL-301 II without hesitation.
Yes, I think you will need spacers to level the arm.

Cheers,
Alec
