the home of the turntable

GT-10

the jewel in the crown

GT-10

Hi, An elderly friend donated a Garrard GT-10 to sell at a charity yard sale. Trouble is it only runs if the turntable is given a manual spin first. Even though the yard sale items are priced very low, most between $1-5, do feel funny about selling an item that doesn't run properly.

Anyone have any idea as to why the turntable needs a push? Is it a matter of cleaning or a sign the motor is going? Saw some instructions for cleaning a GT-20, if cleaning is suggested is it okay to follow those?

Thanks for any assistance as hate to disappoint this friend by not having item at sale.

Old grease gets gummy. Do some cleaning.

Cheers,
Alec

Thank you, Alec. Just to satisfy my concern re motor did let the player run in repeat mode for a few hours. Turned it off, than on, and the turntable did turn of its own accord but still seemed a mite slow on the draw. Not sure it is worth the time to clean but donor is seeing it through heart so will tackle cleaning old grease. Or maybe just sell it to my husband for $2.. :-k

The platter bearing, the motor bearings, and the idler bearing will be the most relevant. A drop of oil to each should help.

Cheers,

After all these years, the belt is probably stretched and slipping on startup.
