Hi All,

New to the forum and would welcome some advice with regard to the Garrard 86 sb mkII Turntable.
Picked it up yesterday at no cost, after some initial investigation it appears that the motor assembly is u/s.
Can anyone advise on the following:
1 - Any idea where I might pick up a replacement/refurbished motor assembly?
2 - Does anyone know who might actually refurbish the motors?
3 - Is there any value in trying go source the above?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have

I have. A 100sb that had a motor that ran slow. I just use an external motor on it now.

Much easier

If the coils are ok and local voltage wiring is correct, together with the motor pulley for frequency, the rest should be easy to fix as these motors can be readily disassembled for cleaning and lubricating. Didn't the 86SB models use the Synchro-lab mk2 motor? If so, check the magnetic "ring" at the top of the rotor is intact and correctly stuck in place. I understand that they can come un-stuck these days..

Hi, thanks for the feedback gents, after disassembly found that the top ring has become detached from the magnet, reglued and realigned, now seems to be ok.
motor is working, however there are a couple of weird characteristics that tells me that all is not ok!
The motor makes a slight knocking noise and seems to lift by ~ 1- 2mm whilst rotating, is the magnetic field incorrect?
The transformer/assembly gets very hot and after 10mins there is almost a smell of burning coming from it.
Any clues?

Cheers

sounds like it has a tight spot - easy to have happen when reassembling.

1 - Loosen the through bolts slightly

2 - Tap the case lightly (handle end of an 8-inch screwdriver is good for this) re-tighten the through bolts til they JUST pinch and check the rotor rotates freely.

2a - If not, tap the housing all around again with your screwdriver handle, and check rotation again. Rinse and repeat.

3 - When the rotor spins freely. retighten the through bolts to finish tightness, and check for free spin. If not free, go back to 2a. If still free-spinning, reinstall and enjoy.
