Garrard 301 Turntable project

Postby lfmudge » 24 Jun 2012 02:47

Sorry I am asking again under the right Forum and I have found my old Username...Okay people, I need your help !!! When I was a boy my Father had a Garrard 301 Turntable.. I have wanted one, myself for years..So a couple of days ago I brought one on eBay..It looks okay, by the pics, but I am sure it will need some work..So now I am left with getting all the other stuff together and making it all work...I want to get a 12 '' tonearm or maybe have one 12'' and one 9'' set up on it... I play a lot of 78 Rpm Records as well as LP,s...I have a Grado 78E Pickup and a Shure M78S for the 78,s..For the LP,s I have Pickering Xv-15 and V15 a Shure M97xE and a Empire 4000XL...Later if I can I will get a better Cartridge for the LP,s..So I need to get the best Tonearm I can for the Cartridges I have and the records I play...But like most people I don,t have unlimited funds !!!! Do you wise people out there have any good recommendations as to a make and type of arm I should get...Also as to a good plinth I could have built...Please keep in mind I have to work to a budget .... THANKS

For a new 12" tone-arm, my first choice might be the Jelco SA-750LB.

Cheers,
Alec

I'm in exactly the same position as you and went for this beauty http://www.analoginstruments.co.nz/

There's a waiting list I'm afraid, these are very highly sought after arms, but from all accounts they are well worth the wait. Saves having to spend £3k on an SME 12" !

you can get an SME12" used for far less. I run a 12" Jelco and a 12" SME and prefer the SME by far. Feels more solid and sounds better to my ears. And its beautiful with the 301

You cant beat the Apparition for the price, Jonny! They are much, much better than the Schick arm, or the OL Silver I had. I have one for both my 301 and 401 now.
