Hi a10,

That is great turntable; many view it as the 301's version for the home environment. I have some posts here regarding servicing the tt and setting up the tonearm, please go through them. I also found that this had the “most gummed up” mechanism of all the Garrards here (although it is very simple, being a single player).

I've been especially envious of Tim's 4HF and have been working on three (!) 210 auto changers as a sort of mini version of that approach. Imagine my delight when this u4HF came up and no-one else here in NZ seemed to value it!

Thanks aardvarkash10. I have another 4HF waiting for restoration. This time I'll probably add a modern arm.

That said, while the stock 4HF arm is relatively high mass, it is adjustable. I've experimented with it enough that I have it playing well (really sounds great). I think LPFan has the same story.

I am restoring a 4HF as well - mainly for use playing 78s. The one I am working on has had a problem with the speed control in the past and it has 2 power resistors soldered in in place of the pot to make it work on a fixed speed.

My problem is one of the 3 wires has broken off, and I don't know where it was soldered to. Looks like there are 2 black wires and one brown going to the speed control. Does anyone know how it is supposed to be wired?

The 3k and the 6k resistors are the ones someone added to replace the pot. The 10k and 750 ohm are the original barrel shaped resistors Garrard mounted on a single bolt below where the pot used to be. I am guessing the Black wire that has come loose (the x on the drawing), probably came from the junction on the 3k and 6k resistors (simulating the wiper of the pot when it's set to about 1/3.)

Yep, that was where it came from. All OK now. Although I am looking around for a 10k power pot to restore the adjustability.

The center pin is the wiper, which may be anywhere along the resistance element. This will give answer if we can't find a schematic. Perhaps our helpful old friend LPfan from Mumbai? Last we heard from him, he had a 4HF that was tracking at 2 grams. Cool!

Hi all.

I've got three 4hf's two are just for parts. I use the Shure M44-7 cartridge and although I can get it to track as low as 1.5 grams I prefer it to track at 2 for home use and 3 for club use. To get it to track at under 2 grams I use a sticky weight as a counter balance it is the same weight which is used for wheel balancing when you get a new tyre fitted(Not the clip on type). If it is placed on the flat side at the back of the arm it is hardly noticeable and it sounds nice.

I had a look at the rheostats in the pitch control on two of the 4hf's, one is 2.5k ohm's(American power) and the other one is 10k ohm's(UK power). I'm going to have ago at building a new pitch control, but I'm not sure what the voltage drop across it is so that I can work out the power being dissipated across it.
Does anyone know what the power rating of the rheostat is or how much voltage is being dropped across it?

Will try this at some point. It may turn out to be less of a headache than trying to build a new pitch control.
