Garrard 210 rotation and auto reject issues

Postby alfredjacobs » 11 Jun 2012 22:53

Having some issues with a Garrard 210 that is part of an old 1961 Fisher hifi console. I took off the platter to celan it up and it is being quirky now. I think it had some auto reject issues anyway, but now it seems like the rubber wheel that drives the platter is somewhat lazy and not making enough pressure against the inside of the platter to make it rotate strongly. Anyone know where I can get one of these rubber wheels and who I might be abe to send this unit to be repaired? I live near Philadelphia in the eastern U.S. Thanks.

Also, how do I remove the record changing spindle and replace it with a shorty for just one record at a time? I might have to switch to all manual operation for now. Thanks.

clean, clean, clean.

Check through the Garrard forum - there are a lot of threads on the issues of gummed up Garrards. The problem is ubiquitous.

This is your idler, and these guys are good to deal with

Thanks for the info guys, greatly appreciated.

I discovered VinylEngine when I was looking for the owner's manual, so thanks Alec124c41.

And Aardvarkash10, this is an awesome link and advice. I will purchase a new wheel asap. I also found a shop close-by that specializes in vintage turntable repair and they have a lot of experience with the 210. This baby is headed into the shop as soon as I can get it out of the console cabinet.

Speaking of which, is it ok to transport the 210 without a plinth? I have no plinth as this is set into my Fisher Modern P22 unit. Any advice here?

best to support the tt so the mechanism underneath is not knocked around - find a suitable box or frame for the tt to sit on and dangle its mechanism into.

Also, tape down the tonearm and other bits on top so they can't swing in the breeze during transport.

Cheers

The 210 does not have a removable spindle. Unlike other changers, this one was intended to operate in manual mode also with the long spindle installed. Garrard made the dropping mechanism much more intelligent than other brands, so lifting records off is far easier.

The rubber idler wheel may be revivified by carefully removing the hard outer layer of rubber with fine emery paper. Do this with a lathe or electric drill so you do it uniformly, and do not mistakenly rub flat areas onto the idler wheel.

The arm pillar has an in-built lock, the lever at the base, turn it towards the platter & it locks the arm down.

Also the flag on the end of the size-select arm can be rotated to point downwrds, so it is less likely to be broken off in transit.

Hello, hoping you guys maybe able to advise! My aunt has a tempest super 60 and I need to find her a replacement needle. I can't find any reference to tempest apart from models for sale in South Africa so I assume its an SA make. Any idea on what sort of needle or replacement cartridge I should get (she is in Zimbabwe and I am in the UK so it's a little hard to pop round and have a look!!)

Many thanks for any advice you may be able to offer
