Noise floor of cartridges

Hi all,

I'd like to point out whilst MC vs MM is very subjective, regarding the
minimum theoretical noise floor there are very objective differences.

The noise floor of a typical MM is stymied somewhat by its inductance,
consequently noise at high frequencies is effectively determined by the
47K loading resistor of the input stage, not the ~ 1kohm of the cartridge.

The effect is less severe with low inductance MM's e.g. Grado models.

For MC's, even high output ones this limitation effectively does not exist.

One could argue the noise level of an LP renders the above point somwhat
academic, but I don't think so. I think its the main reason MC's seem to
have that little bit extra, especially through the upper audio range.
