Unknown Cartridge for JVC QL-Y5F

Postby kidcurry » 22 Aug 2012 02:36

Hi I have this cartridge from a JVC QL-Y5F that has no markings and I was wondering if anyone could identfiy the cartridge and/or what type of stylus that is uses. I would really like to hear my turntable in action, Thanks. :D Attached are the images of the cartridge.

That would be an Audio Technica AT70 family body. Not bad, but the needles for that body didn't go as high up in quality as what one might deem adequate for your JVC. But if you'd like to try it nevertheless, I'd suggest to look for an ATN71E.

A new aftermarket stylus will be a very inexpensive way for you to put life back into that cartridge and turntable. You can get a higher end version of it too, from vendors who deal in more expensive needles, or simply find a Pfanstiel stylus
on eBay from one of the vendors there, costing less than $15 most likely. Be sure to choose elliptical stylus if there's a choice between conical or elliptical for it, will probably sound better. Ask the vendor if you can send the photos of the cartridge to verify the stylus number, they'll know right away which one to put it with. There are a few Audio Technica models which are very similar in style, and I'm not as sure exactly which of them this particular one is. The stylus designs are not interchangeable, i.e. is this really a AT3400, AT3600, AT70? i.e. the black part is not exactly like the AT70 I am familiar with.

mrow2: You could refresh your memory, e.g. with a picture search for the AT70L. Shall mean, I'm roundabout 100% sure, that this is an AT70 family body - also because it looks just the same as the bodies of my own AT71E(LC)s. :)

P.S.: Granted, though, the pics are somewhat blurry. For example, the triangular recessions on the sides of the mounting frame near the front are very hard to spot in the pic, unless one already knows how these look like...

Lini OK, I just mentioned as a "just in case," if he chooses an inexpensive solution to start with, to send the photo to the guy or gal running the eBay biz to double check. They are pretty good with ID especially with cartridges such as this. The AT70 photos of the two I checked seem to have a notch on the side of the black top at the front end, didn't notice it here. You know this cart better than I do however. I probably had one a month ago, but I do not have one now to really make a comparison.

I cannot see the notch in Kidcurry's pictures, and in the vendor sites it's easy to see. To Kidcurry, you could remove the cart from the headshell and see if there is a tag on the top of the cart stating the model number!

Ah, I see what you mean: Well, that's not really a "complete notch" - i.e. the black plastic mounting frame still continues under the needle, just somewhat recessed, so that these spots covered, when the needle is mounted. If you take a look at the inside of an AT70 family needle (using the rotating view), it might become more obvious: http://www.turntableneedles.com/Needle-206-DET_p_937.html There you can also see the triangular structures I mentioned above...

Yes, I've got an orange AT71 stylus sitting on my desk, with pretzel-shaped cantilever (amazing sound!) and see the triangle. Agree, this is AT70 - 71 family stylus, and if the QL-5F owner wants an inexpensive solution, it can be had for about $14 USD + pocket change, postage free from two nice vendors at that Fee-place.

mrow2: Or he could simply go for an original ATN71 or ATN71E. Garage-a-records still offers these for not quite 20/30 bucks, which I'd deem a fair price. Imo a pretty good vendor, btw: I got my own AT71E(LC)s there, and it was a completely positive shopping experience with comparatively low shipping cost and nevertheless fairly quick delivery - I think it only took four or five days after the order for the parcel to arrive over here, and that with the cheapest shipping option...

Yes, good experience with Garage-A-Records. I just noticed at that Fee-Bait place
some vendors have the AT-95E, whether from Thakker in EU or one of the USA places, for rather reasonable moneys, i.e. around 43-45 usd.

Yup, but I don't really see the point in that, 'cause imo the AT71E(LC) isn't any worse than the AT95E - and in a comparatively big headshell like KC's JVC exemplar, the more boxy design of the AT70 family also looks better for my taste. So a new ATN71E/ATN771E would seem a better idea to me for a start - in the long run I'd suggest a better cart for the QL-Y5F anyway (a Denon DL110 would seem suitable and pretty adequate, for example).
