Why does my cartgridge make snapping sounds?

Postby katana1100 » 21 Aug 2012 23:25

My records are clean and they sure as heck don't make this sound on my Technics 1200 with a denon 110.
I have a Pioneer PL41 with stock pioneer cartridge a PC 35 with a brand new Transcriber aftermarket stylus. The music sounds fine but there are these loud snapping sounds that sound like a someone snapping a rubber band. I have the tracking force set at 2.5 grams.

That sounds like it might be static electricity. There are several aftermarket items that deal with static electricity.

Regarding your screen name - do you ride a Suzuki, perhaps?

Guilty as charge, I have a '91 katana 1100. Most of my riding now is done on my '11 Concours 14 though.
Static electricity? Why does it affect my Pioneer and not the Technics TT? Should I try the Denon 110 on my Pioneer 41?

It can be deck dependant but I've found that it's usually with decks made from acrylic, (Project etc). If there's that much static about you'll feel it as you lift the record off the platter as the hairs on your hands stand up! I'd be tempted to try the 110 on the deck anyway, it might just sound better! :)

I owned a Project Experience, (or something like that!), that was made of clear acrylic throughout and you could hear the crackle of static through the speakers as you got the record within a few inches of the platter and the hairs on my hands would stand on end!, it was awful. However, there was no crackling while it was playing.

My friend had a similar problem with his DL110 while it was breaking in, it eventually went away.

I hope it is a break in thing, I spent a lot of time making sure the cartridge on both tables were mounted just right with the right amount of weight and would hate to undo that only to find it was the table or something else.

I think you are the winner here. I sat down and listened to my QuarterFlash debut album. I timed the snaps- they occurred exactly every 7 secs. The second song, they came every 7.5 secs (annoying!)
I flipped the disc when it was over and listened- snaps came every 11 secs first song. By the end of the discs, I stopped timing so I can say the interval.
I put on my Nautilus version of Police Zendatta Monhatta- only a couple of snaps side one!
Side two- no snaps! So, maybe the new needle needed to break in. Also, this old pioneer pn35 conical tip cartridge sounded better than I expected from a 40 year old cartridge.Does anyone know who made it for pioneer or what cartridge was its equivalent?
