A good budget cartridge to go with Pioneer PL-112D?

Postby JamboClark » 21 Aug 2012 12:27

Hi

I've got an old Pineer PL-112D turntable, but the Shure B 12 cartridge it came with is knackered and I need to get a replacement for it. I'm looking for a budget cartridge because I'm likely to get a new turntable in the next year or so, and don't want to waste a high end cartridge on this turntable. Any suggestions for what would be a good choice?

I listen to a big range of music, from jazz music like Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra to music like Feist, then electro-acoustic music like Portico Quartet, Aphex Twin and hip hop like J Dilla (now that's a supergroup)

Oh and I'm using Wharfedale Linton 3XPs and haven't yet bought but am looking to use a Rotel RA-01,02, or maybe 04 or 05 with it!

Look for a good buy on a new Audio Technica AT-95e or if you want to spend more, Shure M97XE. These can range from around $40-$80 if you shop. Alternately, one of the basic Grado models.

+1,
I have both. I like the M97XE on my belt drive Pioneer 117D, it warms my somewhat bright sounding system. If your system already sounds warm or neutral, then the AT95E might be the way to go.

The OP is in the UK, prices for the Shure are sadly going to be about double. Aside from the AT95 I would recommend the Ortofon 2M Red, I must admit to being a bit of a fan and it allows the OP to upgrade at a later point to the Blue stylus.

I'd go for an AT-440MLa and nothing less.
If you're in the UK, some shops still sell the Stanton 681EEE, also a good allrounder.
Besides, if you buy a new TT, you can move the cart to it.

I only recommend the AT-95E to peepz who have no money and still want to listen to vinyl records. It's in my experience, nowhere as good as some people want us to believe. It's just dirt cheap and does it's job. There also is a big variation in production, all of the samples I've tested sounded different.

My 2M red went back to the reseller, bad sample, so I can't recommend it.

Jambo, the pl-112 is a decent table, so it can handle a bit more than cheapy/basic.

Have a look at williamthakker.eu, he's knocking out Nagaoka mp110's @ €87.90, which is a great price. That cart majors on suppressing noise, having a rich tone and is also good enough to transplant onto a better table as a starter cartridge.
There are some things you can't cover up with lipstick and powder
