Pickering TL-3 vs Ortofon M15E

Postby luddite100 » 19 Aug 2012 22:52

I'm rehabbing my old Technics 1500 TT and have a Pickering TL3 and an older Ortofon M15E. Before I spring for new styli, I would like to hear opinions about their merits.
Thanks for any advice.

Isn't the TL-3 a P-mount?

It is a P-mount with the included half-inch adapter when I bought it ? years ago.

You won't care for this answer, but I'd consider the Ortofon OM-10 Super as it's upgradeable with the OM-20, 30 and 40 stylii. Some other options for your turntable are the Audio-Technica AT-120E, the AT-440ML, the Nagaoka MP-110 and the Shure M97xE (that can be upgraded with the JICO SAS stylus). These are all moving magnet cartridges that don't require a special phono stage. If you don't want to buy a new cartridge at this time, the Ortofon M15E should give better results than the Pickering in the adapter, although, I'd give them both a listen and then make my choice that way.

I DO care for your answer because I trust those who have kept up with the gear and can offer excellent advice. I agree your suggestion to try both. Perhaps others may chime in. Many thanks.
