I have an at-1001 cart installed on my Technics SL-D5. The sound is pretty good except the highs have some grain. I tried a Grado Green but the sound seemed a little lifeless.I have not had much luck with this cart. My question is,changing out the conical stylus on the 1001 with maybe an elliptical 301 ep stylus. any suggestions. maybe an AT-95E or an Ortoforn Omega. Im running through an AT-PEQ3 to a Denon 1610 into Paradigm Monitor7 V.7

A couple of things...

your 1001 is actually the same underlying cartridge electronics as the AT95... but the p-mount series have higher compliance needles than the 1/2" mount versions of the family.

There are lots of stylus choices for the 1001:

All the way through eliptical to HyperEliptical, Shibata and even Microline!

The AT95 has a similar range of needles available... and they are all mid compliance suspended - which would match better with your arm - in theory.

The Ortofon Omega is a lovely cartridge too - basically a rebranded Ortofon OM3/5 - upgradeable with any of the OM series styli ... but again most of the OM's are like the 1001 high-ish compliance - the AT95 would be a better match for your table/arm I would have thought.

With a lower mass arm I would have gone for the 1001 with a stylus upgrade - or the Omega as I am very fond of the OM family, especially when fitted with styli from the 20 through to the 40.

bye for now
