Newbee Seeking Advice

Postby thewhoseeker » 04 Aug 2012 15:55

Hello, I have a Pioneer PL-512 (silver) deck with a Ortofon OM10 (or possibly OM10 Super) cartridge and Ortofon 10 stylus. I've had this deck via my father since it was bought in the 70s.

I believe I've set up the weight and anti skate correctly after downloading the manual from here. (I set it to zero, so it balances straight, and then adjusted according to tracking weight of said cartridge. I think that's how to do it???).

My question is, is there a good cartridge / stylus upgrade I could do?

I do like this deck and the sound as it is but if there's a relatively cheap good upgrade path I'd love to. Oh, it's missing it's dust cover too, none on Ebay so any ideas there?

Many thanks in advance for any tips.

Yep, easy upgrade is to replace the OM stylus with 20,30 or 40 depending on your budget.

Many thanks! I'll look into that. Pressumably the deck is good enough for the 40 and I take it the cartridge is not too bad then?

Sorry, I don't know your table but my OM went on a budget TT from the early 1980s and was fine.
Have seen various comments that the Stylus 30 is the sweet spot in the range. I put a 30 on my OM and it was better than the 10 and 20 I had.
Cartridge is a fine one and the range of easy replacement styli make it very flexible.
You might have to find out if you have the OM or Super OM. I don't know what the differences are.

The LP Gear Shibata replacement for the OM40 would be the ultimate with the OM body. A great deal at $200.
