Shure V15 V-MR vs V-P ??

Postby Durr3 » 17 Jun 2012 18:08

Just bought a Dual CS-5000 and I have two cartridges: Shure V15 Type V-P w/stylus and V15 V-MR w/o stylus. What is the difference and where can I get a stylus for the V-MR? Thanks

This all is assuming that I get the CS-5000 going!!

Get yourself a Jico/SAS stylus and you will have in your possession one of the
finest mm cartridges ever made.

Oops, forgot the first part of your question. The p is probably a P-mount cart
and the V15vMR is a standard 1/2" mount cartridge.

You are correct, the difference is essentially in the mount. Another difference is that, in order to be fully "P-mount compliant", the V15P came with a different stylus (VN5P) which is both lighter and brushless - and just as extinct as the original VN5MR. But the Jico VN5MR works like a charm on my V15PSR (the Revox name for V15P). Just be aware that the V15xMR used a different shank, incompatible with the older V15MR and VN5P.

If you have an intact V15Vp stylus there is nothing available today to match it...

Look after that stylus - the beryllium tube cantilever achieves an effective tip mass of around 0.17mg.

The nearest available current stylus is the Jico SAS which works out at around 0.3mg effective tip mass. - Still very good but not nearly as good as the original

The V15VP and V15VMR are electrically completely identical (I have both) - also the Jico SAS VN5MR stylus fits both, and works well on both.

Pro's and con's:

On a p-mount arm the V15Vp plugs in and goes.... easy, quick and effective!

On a 1/2" mount arm you can go either way....
Keep in mind that the V15VMR will weigh in at around 6.5g mounted, where the V15Vp carries the additional weight of the 1/2" adapter... and will come out at around 8g mounted.

The difference in mass will make a difference in resonant frequency - in 90%+ of cases the 1/2" mount V15VMR body is the better option as you will be trying to reduce mass to the minimum possible.

On the Revox Linatrack, (which I have) the V15VMR is also the better option for optimal performance - but putting cartridges on or off that arm is a bear of a job, so I use p-mounting to make my life easier.
End result is that I use a V15Vp with a VN5MR-SAS stylus on it.... works very well indeed!

bye for now

Watch out, the S-120 is a serious challenger........quite probably wins on trackability, especially hf trackability, and uses half an aluminium telegraph pole as a cantilever

I have every respect for the Shure V15 series in all guises, and the way they went about achieving their aims. But personally, I'm thoroughly unconvinced of the hyperbole surrounding exotic cantilevers, ETM etc. There's more than one way to achieve the same end, and Shure's was just one in the big scheme of things.

But, if you have an intact V15Vp original stylus, I agree it needs appreciating as an example of its type, IMHO. It's bona fide.

Enjoy !

The Type V-P has a Shure stylus, but it does not say which type. Just a serial number. No brush....

Here is a pic of the V15VMR Jico/SAS stylus with the brush in the up position.
Note that the logo says "stereo" and not "Shure". Apologize for the poor quality.
