I've been running my DL 301 II for the past week and thought I'd post some comments. First off, I do hear some clear improvements over the 110. Bass frequencies sound a bit deeper and possibly a little more detailed. The sound overall is very balanced and detailed, and there is a noticeable, though again very slight improvement in tracking and surface noise. The lower output isn't a problem, I still can't bear to push my Rotel RA1070 far past the halfway mark.

The question then is whether the slight improvement in performance is worth paying three times the price. I don't regret my purchase at all, but it's certainly something to consider next time around.

A nice compareison of several cartridges in the "reasonable" price range. Much appreciated for this 'back to vinyl' oldtimer.

I've had those exact same thoughts several times when switching cartridges around and I've noticed that what really makes me appreciate the cartridge (and the price difference) for real is when I switch back.
For some reason, I notice a difference from current to something lesser ALOT easier than from current to better.
With that said I nowadays, when testing, always switch back and fourth a couple of times.
The good to not as good switch is easier to spot than good to better. Atleast for me.

Just my two cents.

Yeah, that makes sense. Trying different carts is fun too, I don't know if I'll ever buy the same one twice because it seems curiosity always gets the best of me.

It is very interesting this discussion for me because I am using now a DL-110 in my Thorens TD-125 with a TP-16 tonearm. And my options are the Denon DL-301 mkII and DL-304, but I am not really sure if it worth to pay more on the DL-304.

I replaced my 110 with an SAE 1000, and am very happy. Great price for an amazing cart

Hi Boukman,

interesting dichotomy here. Your are changing from one DL-110, and I am just getting to know one.

Comparing with the DL-103R, I am quite happy with the DL-110 in about 98% of records played, and could even take it to a "desert island" situation, living happily with it. But both have individual personalities, with the DL-103R being the more neutral and self-effacing.

Best wishes,

I have a DL 110 installed on a KD 550 with stock Kenwood arm. I love it and when it needs replacing I will probably buy another.

cheers, Bob

bjorn,

Looking forward to your listening impressions. I have just installed a 301MKII on a DP45-F DD table and although I'm only a half dozen or so lp's in I must say I am very impressed. Wide soundstage, great detail, very good separation and quiet. As it settles in a bit I am looking forward to what it has to offer.

Good listening!
