Retipping a Technics 310MC Cartridge?

Postby chapel » 12 Mar 2012 20:08

I have a 310MC cartridge and the diamond stylus is missing. Is this fixable?
If so, who would you send this to (in the US)?
Will it ever sound as good as original?
Do they have to replace the entire stylus or can they insert a new diamond tip onto the original cantilever (assuming it's in good order)?

I also have a 310 MC. I tried to contact Sound-Smith both by email and telephone to find out if it could be retipped, but did not get a reply to my email or voice-mail message. Hope that you have better luck. If they do reply, I would appreciate it you would post the response.

FWIW, I have read a post on one of the forums that Sound-Smith cannot re-tip this particular cartridge.

I might pick up a Digitrac 300SE then.

MMcD, then you misread the post. They can indeed retip and did so with mine, even though it had no cantilever.

Send them the EPC 310MC and they'll evaluate it and let you know whether it is possible.

Excellent service too, by the way. Would highly recommend them.

Ignore mcdmgb's post, it is misleading, and follow the procedure documented on the Soundsmith site. You'll need the RA number.

I think you know all this already, though, chapel. Didn't you ask the same question on audiokarma and get positive responses?

I did, but the price might be well out of my range right now.
I wouldn't want to retip it with an aluminum cantilever and I can't afford the ruby ones (nor do I know if that's even as good as the boron cantilever that it has already) and I can't afford the $350 'tip only' service.

I'm hoping the 310MC on the SL-10 I just got is good enough to use.

As I recall, the poster gave a plausible technical reason as to why the cartridge couldn't be retipped. Glad to see that someone has had a 310MC actually retipped by Sound-Smith chime in.

I'll certainly hold onto the cartridge for a future retipping when I can afford it.
