Shure SC35C... Highly recommended

Thanks for the replies Flavio. I have no intention of using the Shure SC35C, it just brought up an intersting topic so I wanted to ask about the M44G.
You probably missed it so I'll ask again ... do you have any info and input on using the N55E stylus with the M44G ? I've seen some talk of it in the forums but didnt find much in depth information.

Regarding cleaning, I have and use a RCM on my Vinyl. I was just curious about record wear details you mentioned. I know that heavier tracking doesnt necessarily equate to more record wear depending on some factors. But 5 grams? That would make me uncomfortable and I was leary about the conclusions of the article/study that you mention. Just wanted to see if they were comparing apples to apples. I still wouldnt track at 5G but maybe that's just me.

I think it's not possible. And even if you could, the highs will be absent. The M75 is a high inductance cartridge that severely rolls off the highs. The styli for the M75/44/55 have a strong HF resonance, so both cancel out and you get (somewhat) flat response. I don't like that approach, btw. The cartridge of the SC35C, like modern Shure cartridges (i.e. V15, M97), don't have such strong rolloff.

Alternative: - Very low capacitance... say 60pf? balances out the high inductance...

No reason it shouldn't work! The classic M44 and M55 cartridges are almost identical in shape, and they are identical inductance too.

My M44-7 measures 740mH inductance... that does not seem to be the same as the 420mH you are quoting for the SC35C !?

Hey fellas, I have been toying with the idea of running the SC35C on my Syntec 220 tonearm which is a Jap manufactured broadcast arm of higher mass. Currently I have been unable to find the exact mass of the arm. I found one version of the arm called the Piezo and it recommended a cart (Also made by Piezo) which tracked at around 2.5 grams. Currently I use an AT Precept which tracks at 2 grams and love the sound for the most part. One thing is that it could use a more uniform and stable soundstage. Detail is great, but I am wondering if a less compliant cart would give me the stability I seek? Great thread BTW!

Would you please give more details on the cartridge you're using?

The SS35C stylus is very low compliance so chances are that you'll end up adding more mass; which opens a lot of nice possibilities (damping, inertial stabilization, etc.)

Audio Technica PCN 110E .4 X .7 elliptical. 1-2 grams tracking. Actual compliance figure unknown to me. I will say that the cantilever tends to bounce more than I am used to when it rides a warp. Still tracks an I can't hear anything, but it does seem bouncy.

Looks like a mid-high tonearm mass to me, no matter what the literature says. Give it a try! You can always add mass with blu-tack for example.

Did you know that the Syntec/Sedco/Piezo tonearm was actually the first Audio-Technica 1005 from the mid-Sixties?

If you check the cartridge that came with the Piezo, it is a very low compliance cartridge (5cu).

So the SC35C suits this arm.

After reading this thread I took a walk over to Guitar Center to see if they had the SC35C. They only had the replacement stylus so for $15.00 I thought why not try it in one of my Shure cartridges with the same body type.

It fits the M97xE perfectly. It also fits the M104E and V15 type RS but with just a little bit of play. I'm guessing this is because M104E and V15 type RS are probably 20 years or so older than the M97xE and the current SC35C. Because of the grip design of the SS35C, it wouldn't fit the M95Ed body.

Adding a couple of pennies to the headshell of my Pioneer PL-41D, I was able to get the required tracking force. It actually sounded very good in all of the cartridges. Very good bass and mids with no annoying highs. Comparing this setup to my M44G which tracks at about 1gm, the SS35C in the "light weight" bodies sounded more refined.
