Moving Coil for an Accuphase E 202?

Postby copycat » 14 Mar 2011 08:45

Hi
I have a bit of a beginners question, I have been running a Sumiko Black Pearl cartridge on a Rega planar 2 with a Linn Basik LV V arm for about 9 years and been happy but its I think its about time to upgrade alittle on the cartridge front.

Now I would love to get a moving coil but my beloved Accuphase E 202 amp only has a MM phono input and not a Moving coil stage (as far as I can tell) and I don't really want to go down the pre amp road so I was hoping a high output MC might be the way to go, I am just a bit concerned about compatibility.

I was looking at the Denon DL-110 Phono Cartridge with an Output of 1.6mV or the Dynavector 10X5 with Output Voltage 2.5mV now the
Sumiko Black Pearl is 5mV and my Accuphase amp has two phono inputs
Disk 1 is 2.5-5mV (variable) with a switch for 30k ohms, 47k ohms, 100k ohms and Disk 2 is 2.5mV; 47k ohms.

On the rear of the amp there are two big knobs assigned to disc 1 input which I can only guess are left & right volume (as they do increase the volume when turned)
Just to further confuse me the amp also has a Disc Low Enhancement (for Disc Input) +1db at 100hz to RIAA standard characteristics (which I don't have the foggiest what that means) do any of these things help me on the MC front?

Is it possible to run either the Dynavector or the Denon straight into my amp?

Also I hope to get a RB 300 for the Planar to replace my Linn Basik LV V sometime in the future does this change anything?

Phew that was a lot to get out!

Both high-output MCs will work with both inputs.

The +1dB thing probably just increases the bass somewhat.

Yes. Your Accuphase E-202 is equipped with 2 phono inputs. MM & MC and is switchable from 30/47/100 ohm. It's actually a very nice preamp section.

Wait... Are you sure? Looks like it is two mm inputs but one has variable load.

Hey,

Pretty sure. 100k ohm is MC territory.

Sir,
I've never heard about any MC that likes 100k ohm, 100000 ohm.
If it had been 100 ohm, even 1000 ohm, then ok, but a MC who likes more load than the regular MM load 47k ohm. I have however seen MM stages with 30k, 47k and 100k ohm.
So are you absolutely sure that 100000 ohm, 100k ohm is MC territory?

Should propably add that it is low output MC's im talking about. Not high output 47k ohm ones.

+1.

In addition, input sensitivity is listed as 2.5-5 mV on Disc 1 and 2.5 mV on Disc 2, both of which are higher that any LOMC of which I'm aware. Based on that alone, I'd say that both inputs are for MM or HOMC.

The DL-110 and the 10X-5 will both work with either input, but I'd use input #1 so you can try different load settings to see which sounds best.

Sorry gang, I think you might be right there. I did use a MC with the E-202 but it was infact a high output version.

Apologies for any confusion.
